John Altmiller (1958)
John Altmiller (1958) writes, "As our 50th reunion approaches, I have reflected on some of the ways in which having attended Villanova has influenced my life over the past 50 years. Foremost and most lasting it resulted in my meeting the woman from Rosemont, Mary Jane who, five years later, in 1964 became my wife. We have four children (3 boys and a girl) and two granddaughters. Our oldest son graduated from Villanova in 1988.
After leaving the Navy in 1962, my Villanova engineering education and a suggestion by a Villanova classmate, Dave Dubbles, brought me to Binghamton, NY. There I worked on the simulator for the Apollo mission, including spending seven months at the Kennedy Space Center. Being in Binghamton, when I decided on a career change, I selected Cornell Law School, to which I could commute and from which I graduated in 1971. This eventually led to a career as a partner in an intellectual property law firm, Kenyon & Kenyon, first in NYC and later starting the firm’s office in DC from which I recently retired.
Villanova also played a part my decision in 1997 to enroll in the Washington Theological Union. At a parent’s Mass, a homily by Fr. Dobbin caused me to begin reading theology. After a number of years, encouraged by an Augustinian I met through a Villanova contact and joined by a Villanova classmate, John Burns, I started classes. Eventually, John and I each earned a Masters degree in theology from the Washington Theological Union. I now put this knowledge to use in my parish working in adult formation and serve on the board of the Union.
Throughout the years my Villanova friends have remained my closest ones and I have enjoyed coming back to reunions with them. Clearly, being a Villanovan has enriched and influenced the course of my life, not to mention the educational and moral formation that it provided. As I see the school gain in prestige both in academics and sports I feel much pride and joy. This is particularly true since I believe that, unlike many other “Catholic” universities, Villanova has not lost its Catholic identity. I am looking forward to the 50th. "

Joseph Walheim (1958)
Joseph Walheim (1958) writes, " Immediately following graduation, I attended Villanova Law School. In 1959 I was married to the former Mary Jo Rafferty whom I dated throughout undergraduate school. The first of our nine children arrived 10 ½ months later. After graduation from law school, I went to work in Philadelphia for a small firm where I eventually became a shareholder and stayed for 35 years. In January of 1997, I left that firm and began a practice in Delaware County Pennsylvania. Two of my sons who are CPAs, bought a building at 40 W. Eagle Rd., Havertown Pennsylvania and were about to rent their second floor to a lawyer when I said I would take the space. We have enjoyed a close working relationship ever since. We have been vacationing in Eaglesmere, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania for the last 40 years. We regularly celebrate events with our 31 grandchildren, 29 of whom reside in the Philadelphia area. We are expecting our 32nd grandchild this summer. Seven of our children attended Villanova. At one time, we had 4 children at Villanova at the same time. We enjoy season tickets to football and basketball where we are fortunate enough to have 12 family tickets all together. One of my fondest memories was attending the final four in 1985 with my son and with classmate, John Yannacone and his son. I gave up golf as too time consuming about 35 years ago and took up tennis. I now enjoy playing 5 times a week year round."

Clement Birch (1958)
Clem Birch (1958) writes, "My 50 year journey has been wonderful - packed with challenges, successes, dead-ends, failures, and enough "2nd chances" that I find myself still expanding possibilities.
I've been married twice including my present and forever wife and partner Barbara, and have been blessed with 5 wonderful kids (2 sons, 2 step-sons & 1 daughter) & 10 grandkids.
There have been many paths to success: stock broker, Villanova Development Office, Public Relations officer for a company that build power plants around the world including Quetta, Pakistan and India's First Nuclear Power Plant (Tarapur); several years marketing large teaching Planetariums to high schools across the US; many years of strategic planning and helping to turn injured companies around; much voice and television commercial work, and finally 14 years ago, the start-up of our Watkins business and our network of many independent home & family businesses across the US and Canada.
Our travels have included 4 years of making television commercials in South Africa for a start-up insurance company; and trips to the UK, Netherlands, Ireland, Mexico, Barbados, Nassau, Jamaica and Canada.
Retire? Not as long as we/I can make a difference in the lives of those we touch. I love my life and am deeply grateful to be able to attend our 50th class Reunion.

Edward Thompson (1990)
Edward Thompson (1990) died on March 8, 2008.

In this town, 9/11 never goes away.
Not for long, anyway.
This weekend's 9/11 story wasn't just that the "Survivors' Staircase" was removed from Ground Zero, to be returned someday as part of the memorial when the new buildings go up.
There was another reminder closer to home.
Staten Island lost NYPD Sgt. Ned Thompson at age 39 on Sunday morning, just hours before one of his favorite events, the St. Patrick's Parade, would step off a couple of blocks from his West Brighton home.
The father of four young girls, a superstar cop in the West Village, lost his battle for life in Manhattan's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
And we lost another Islander who did what he knew to be the right thing in the hours after the Sept. 11 attacks, and who paid a terrible price.
Thompson was a first responder from the Sixth Precinct, just up West Street from the attack site. He worked the bucket brigades in the days following the building collapses, sifting the debris in hopes of finding survivors.
He'd develop a hacking cough later on. Something unusual for a nonsmoker, the doctors said. Then, in December, he was finally diagnosed.
Cancer.
It's a story that has become familiar in this town.
And, after years of fumbling, the city has begun to accept responsibility for such illnesses.
"I'd do it again," Thompson told people of his work at Ground Zero.
And it makes you wonder how New Yorkers got so lucky as to deserve the Ned Thompsons of the world.
Thompson would have never made it as a Hollywood version of what a New York City cop should be. Oh, he looked the part all right. Big and burly, with an open Irish face. But Thompson didn't go in much for blustery attitudes or loud talk.
He was a quiet guy. Funny, in a clever, understated way. With humor befitting an English major out of Villanova University. But never crass.
"It just wasn't his way," said Lt. Mike Casey, Thompson's boss at the Sixth Precinct. "He was always the consummate professional. But if something had to be done, you called Ned. It got done."
He was the go-to guy the higher-ups asked to analyze crime stats. And to plan operations.
"He had a real feel for the work," said Casey. "He was so smart."

David Knuth (1973)
David Vaughn Knuth | Engineer, volunteer, 56
David Vaughn Knuth, 56, of Roxborough, an engineer and church volunteer, died (Jan 7 2008) of pancreatic cancer Monday at Paoli Hospital. Mr. Knuth had been an engineer with the Philadelphia Water Department for 34 years, eventually becoming a supervisor for planning and research. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Villanova University in 1973 and later earned a master's degree in engineering from Villanova while working.
For 16 years, he helped manage the softball team at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Malvern and also volunteered to set up church gospel concerts.
He enjoyed listening to music by Christian artists, as well as golfing, skiing, and in-line roller-skating, said his sister, Anita Osteen. He followed Philadelphia sports teams and was an avid Flyers fan, she said.
Mr. Knuth grew up in Malvern and graduated from Great Valley High School. He played bass clarinet in the school band and competed in state band competitions.
After his cancer was diagnosed four years ago, his sister said, he underwent surgery and did well for several years. When his health started to fail again, he fought the decline with courageous determination, she said.
In addition to his sister, Mr. Knuth is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Dolores Knuth; a niece; and a nephew.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, 89 Line Rd., Malvern. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Burial will be in Philadelphia Memorial Gardens, Malvern.
