Lee-Ann (Howard) O'Dell (1990), Assistant Director of the University of Virginia’s Hampton Roads Center in Virginia Beach is concluding a four year, grant funded professional development project in Franklin City Public Schools. The work, which was partially underwritten by the Franklin-Southampton Charities, focused on a variety of areas including leadership, reading, writing, special education and mathematics. It involved a sustained effort of direct training combined with job embedded coaching, and leadership work sessions to guide the effort. As a result, student achievement increased in a number of the targeted project areas. Most notably, third graders passed the state assessment in reading for the first time and eighth graders passed the state assessment in writing for the first time, then climbed an additional ten percentage points. The Hampton Roads Center of the University of Virginia is part of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Ms. O’Dell’s area of expertise is in developing long-term partnerships with school divisions for the purposes of delivering small to large scale, multi-year, customized professional learning for classroom teachers, specialists, building and central office leadership. Benjamin Giles (2008) Benjamin Giles (2008) received a fellowship for the summer at the Cronkite Journalism School at Arizona State University. At a program called News21, he'll spend the summer working with faculty at the Cronkite school, including Len Downie Jr., and 10 other fellows. While visiting the ASU campus recenlty, he had a conference in conjunction with News21 and was able to speak with Len and Bob Woodward. He will be assistign in the production of an in-depth investigative reporting project in tandem with the Center for Public Integrity. Submitted on Mar 3 2010. Kristin (Sparks) Sanderlin (1996) Kristin (Sparks) Sanderlin (1996) was recently named Teacher of the Year at Landstown High School. She teaches English and journalism; she also advises the high school newspaper. Landstown has more than 2,000 students. At Virginia Wesleyan, Krissy majored in English and minored in journalism. Aubrey Von Lindern (1998) received a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from University of Vermont in December 2008. Submitted on Jan 14 2010. Leigh Harrell (1997) Leigh Harrell (1997) received her PhD in Educational Research and Evaluation (EDRE)from Virginia Tech on December 18, 2009. She received the Outstanding Doctoral Student of the Year award for the EDRE program in 2009. She is currently an instructor and the undergraduate coordinator for the Department of Statistics at Virginia Tech, a position she has held since August 2004.
