This novel is about the classic themes of love and loss – but while it is a tale of love between father and son and son and lover, it is also a tribute to a fading way of life.
The book brings the reader to a small town in the coastal foothills of Oregon, just a few decades ago, but it’s a world apart from cities and fast-paced technology. A multi-generational logging family strives to maintain their way of life and their livelihood in the midst of multi-state conglomerates and a changing industry, all the while dealing with the daily risks facing those who earn their living in the woods.
Its characters are not pretty people - this is a hard-drinking, hard-working group, with their own prejudices against city folk and desk jobs, their own weaknesses in personal relationships. But it is, at heart, a multi-tiered love story for a life that will not come again.

BreAnna (Avants) Schafer (2003) writes, "Nicholas and I are doing very well. We love our jobs even though we are incredibly busy. I am teaching and it amazes me everyday to see the growth in my students. Nicholas owns his own business and has more than 160 students. We are fortunate to have a new home and new adventures. We have just purchased our first home, a brand new 3bd 2/5ba townhouse. We have decided to live here for a few years and then buy again, using this house as an investment and rent it to local college students and/ or families. Nicholas's business will take us to Las Vegas (again!) this spring and Cancun, Mexico this summer. We are looking forward to children someday... but for now we are focused and interested in our careers, travels, and time together. I miss Eugene... but it has been wonderful to return for visits. "

Jeffrey Weston '74 captained the Idaho state snow scultping team to vicotry in the 2005 U.S. National Snow Sculpting Championship in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, in February. Weston, a painter and sculptor, who studied under Jan Zack at the UO while earning his BFA degree, created, along with two teammates, the winning piece, titled "marine Garden. The team will compete next year to represent the United States in snow scultping at the 2006 Winter Olympics to be held in Turin, Italy.

She recently married Ian Rozdilsky in a small ceremony; they plan to travel to Bulgaria to celebrate with a large traditional wedding. Jane Welp '81 is a child support enforcement agent in The Dalles; she has also been a part-time instructor at Columbia Gorge Community College for seventeen years. In 1998, she earned her master's in teaching English to speakers of other languages. She and her husband, Christen Welp '71 live in The Dalles. Chris owns CW Construction and has been a builder since 1977.
