Deborah (Brown) Kimokeo (1979)
Deborah (Brown) Kimokeo (1979, BS; 1983, MS) writes, Upon completion of my undergraduate degree at University of Oregon, I married my husband and taught elementary school on the Oregon Coast and simultaneously finished a graduate UO degree, MS in Curriculum and Instruction. Later I moved to Portland and earned an MS (1991) in School Psychology at Lewis & Clark College. I had a wonderful time serving with my friends in the state leadership of the Oregon Reading Association, on a national committee with the International Reading Association, and became charter president of a local reading council during my tenure in Oregon. In 1988, we migrated to the East Coast where I served as a school psychologist in New Jersey, while living in Pennsylvania, and fulfilled a dream of starting my doctoral program at Teachers College/Columbia University in New York City. I continued in leadership with the International Reading Association, becoming a charter president of a local council in New Jersey, also. In 1998, my husband and I moved back West-to Davis, California- where I now work for Davis Joint Unified School District as a Crisis & Prevention Manager and co-facilitate a parent education class for the community, "Parent Project", with my good friend and colleague from the local police department. I finally finished my doctorate in Ed Leadership from Columbia in 2006, (tele-advising and doctoral committee selection was quite an interesting cross-country challenge). My most exciting recent professional endeavor is having my first book, "School Suicide Prevention Program Planning: Useful & Efficacious Guidelines" published ( February 2008) by a German academic publishing house, VDM Verlag. Life is good--lots of nieces and nephews in family at varying stages of development, terrific friends across the globe, and a wonderful husband, best friend, (and UO Alum, BS 1976, MS 1983) of 28 years who continues to keep the "Service in the Forest" (USDA Forest Service) as we share our life journeys together. Thanks be to God!

In Memoriam
Walter Baranski (1961)
Walter R. Baranski Jr.
July 21, 1939-June 4, 2006

Walt Baranski (Oregon class of 1962) inspired all those he encountered with his relentless optimism in the face of a debilitating arthritic condition. Once a robust three-sport star at Hoover High in San Diego, and later a standout baseball player at the University of Oregon, Walt was confined to a wheelchair or golf cart for nearly 40 years, but he still tackled life with a smile, his booming voice and deep affection for his family and friends. He spent 31 years as a coach and teacher in San Diego, including 18 years at Patrick Henry High. During his time coaching JV football and basketball, and later varsity football, Walt developed an uncommon rapport with his student-athletes. “Those kids would do anything for Walt,” said LeRoy Dailey, who coached with Walt for six years. “Here’s a man who dealt with constant pain. The kids learned that no matter how hard things are, if you’re hurting or aching, you gotta keep battling. Quitting was never an option for Walt.” The image of Walt sitting in his golf cart, bellowing greetings to passing students and teachers, was reassuringly familiar to anyone who attended Henry in the 1970s and ‘80s. “He always had a smile,” said Dave Walker, class of ’79. “There was energy in his voice every time you saw him.” Among Walt’s abiding passions was his love for the Oregon Ducks – he followed the Ducks closely, and excitedly attended their Holiday Bowl appearances in 2000 and 2005. Survivors include Janice Baranski, Walt’s loving wife of nearly 41 years; their daughters, Candace and Stephanie; son-in-law Todd Bouchard; and grandchildren Nicole Bouchard and Sean Bouchard. A memorial service was held Saturday, June 10, in San Diego. Donations to the Walter Baranski Scholarship Fund, benefiting Patrick Henry students, can be sent c/o Ann Walker, P.O. Box 985, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92097.
