James Scruggs
(1979, ED )
James Scruggs (1979, ED) writes, "It has occurred to me that besides the many degrees and universities I have attended, my greatest and most gratifying personal energies were spent in working for human rights for people. My vocation was science, education and leadership, but my avocation was, and still is, trying to make as much of a contribution to the wellbeing of the human condition as possible. I have worked as the President of the West Haven NAACP & SCLC and been a member of the Connecticut Humans Rights Committee, Migrant Education Committee and West Haven Board of Education. I have authored many articles on contemporary issues as well as four books. My column, "Frankly Speaking", has provided me with the tool to keep me involved even after being retired from my vocations these fourteen years. I have found that the pen is mightier than the sword. It is even more powerful than the atomic bomb! The University of Massachusetts gave me this opportunity! I am proud to say that I am a product of the University of Massachusetts."

Janet (Evensen) Carr
(1954, CNS )
Janet (Evensen) Carr (1954, CNS) and husband Curt recently drove to Asheville N.C. for a reunion with dietitians that Janet interned with at the University of Minnesota in '54 -'55. Out of the group of 11 who have met for the past four years, only three of the women and their spouses were able to attend. However the enthusiasm was there. We are hoping for a bigger turnout next Labor Day when the reunion will be held in New Hampshire.

Michael McWilliams
(1973, SBS )
Michael McWilliams (1973, SBS) writes, "Greetings from Stockholm, Sweden...
Since last year, I've been working here with international UN-affiliated NGO focused on the growing global water crisis.
It's been a long, surprising, ride from my years in the corporate world and as an entrepreneur. After entering the public policy arena in 2004 with the thinktank MassINC, I somehow managed to find myself over here working on much bigger and more urgent issues.
UMass Amherst is in my blood. Both of my sons are grads and doing very well thanks to the education they got. One recently got his Ph.D. in Geophysics from UC Berkeley...and the other guy is now in medical school.
I will be returning to the US in 2010....
If you remember me...let's catch up!"

George Epstein
(1948, NSM )
George Epstein (1948, NSM) writes, "Two weeks ago, I received the Senior Citizen Volunteer-of-the-Year Award from the Westside Optimists Club. Now the Southern California Section of the Society of Plastics Engneers is nominating me to become a Fellow in the International Engineering Society.
I am in my "second" carrer - teaching poker to senior citizens, people with early Alzheimers, and at West LA College. I'm also conducting Poker Labs fashioned after the Chemistry and Physics labs I attended at UMASS. (We had some wonderful professors). Last week, my Claude Pepper Seniors Poker Group held a Charity Poker Tournament to help the center replace funding cut by the City because of its budget problems. It was a HUGE success! And now Culver City wants us to do it for them too."

Myles Flynn
(1989, NRE )
In 1998, after finishing a Masters in Landscape Architecture (GIS Focused) at the University of Arizona and working on staff at the U of A Advance Resource Technology Lab, I took a position as GIS Project Manager for the Royal Commission of Yanbu Al Sinaiyah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Upon completion of my 3 year contract in Saudi Arabia I was recruited by Environmental Systems Research Institute inc. ESRI (www.esri.com) to manage their GIS software distribution network in the Middle East and North Africa. In 2006, I moved my family to the Sultanate of Oman after 6 wonderful years in the Kingdom of Bahrain. My wife (Amy) and I have two beautiful girls (Amani 4yrs and Zaina 3 yrs) . These past 10 years in the Middle East have gone by much to fast but have been full of beautiful memories. I regularly travel to most of the countries in the Middle East and for those of you who are interested in experiencing this wonderful culture all I can say is, don’t believe all of what you see on Fox News. Some of my favorite places are, Petra - Jordan, Luxor and Giza - Egypt, Marrakesh "Morocco, and the Old Sanaa Souk" Yemen.
