Martha Holsclaw (1977)
Martha Holsclaw (1977, MFA) writes, "M. Susan Holsclaw (BFA ’71 UConn & MFA ’77 UMass) has written two books which are available from Lulu.com.
The Peanut & the Pearl by Edna Bale (fiction) is a Hippie Book set in Marin County in the late '70’s where fact and fiction curiously collide bringing up questions of reality: anarchy, revolution, patriotism and democracy, and suggest a even earlier betrayal and much subterfuge. It is about a Vietnam era veteran and a practice school teacher. Also included is 'Aberdeen Academy', a Proposal for an Art School of a Serious Nature but which as much else turns out to be another exercise in futility though still very interesting. This is a valuable book for anyone who plans to teach art.....college or high school. It includes lesson plans for 14 semester courses and is the heart of art-‘as it was....’ A unique offering.
The Fictional Poetry of Edna Bale includes five 'chap' books and reproductions of paintings by the author. Poetry chapter books are: "Sumer-Spring Verse", "Painting Manual (a book of verse)", "Drug Wars", "Travelogue", "Gouda: A Bawdy Play" and "Comedy". The poetry is in turns virtuous, un-virtuous, confessional, grandiose, edgy, scandalous, incendiary, romantic, tragic, rank, bleeding, provocative and many times funny. Also; simple-minded and partly useful. "Painting Manual" is just that: it's a painting manual- about 'content' in art. It's about sentient beings.
Last year Susan had a Retrospective art show in Long Beach which included architectural design/drafting, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography. www.holsclawfineart.com
Susan Holsclaw has worked at the Long Beach VA hospital for the last 17 years as a medical photographer and illustrator.

James Kelly (1976)
James Kelly (1976, HFA) writes, "James Kelly, class of '76, is the author of Where Night Is Day: The World of the ICU. It is published by Cornell University Press in its series The Culture and Politics of Health Care Work edited by Suzanne Gordon.

“James Kelly provides an exceptionally thoughtful narrative of the modern intensive care unit.  He characterizes the rhythms of the ICU and captures odd juxtapositions of the deeply emotional and highly technical, while he explores the complex history and unspoken social hierarchy of American hospitals. Through the experience of caring for critically ill patients and their families, he ultimately delivers a moving meditation on life and death.”

The Washington Wild midget rep team, http://wwfha.com/?page_id=347 , played the Mexican National team 2x this past weekend on our way to winning the top midget girls division at Wickfest, http://www.wickhockey.com/. My 15 year-old daughter plays for the Wild and I am UMass class of 86. While female hockey is just getting started in Mexico, it sounds like there are < 100 women/girls playing, UMass will hopefully be getting some attention as it develops.  Click here for photo

In Memoriam

Frederick Joyce (1977)
Frederick Joyce (1977, HFA) died in September, 2010 from a cancerous brain tumor. Before entering the University as a history major, Fred served in the United States Army 1970 through 1974. He served in the Infantry in Vietnam and earned his Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. After Vietnam he was recommended to Fort Myers in the Old Guard. At UMass/Amherst, he enrolled in the ROTC program and in 1977, he was commissioned as an officer. In 1991, he earned his Master’s degree in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College in Boston. He has written two books about his early years in the military. In his 37 years of service in the United States Army and Army Reserves, Fred rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel. He served in many places around the world such as Korea, Germany and including places in the United States; Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Devens, Massachusetts and Walter Reed Army Medical Facility in Washington, DC. Upon his retirement in February of 2007, he developed a cancerous brain tumor that was connected with his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. He fought valiantly the many battles of this disease but ended losing the “war” in September of 2010. He leaves behind a wife, Paulette and two teenage children, Megan and Sean. His daughter, Megan is following in her dad’s footsteps, as she is a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts Amherst majoring in history. Upon his death, many who served with Fred came forward to share the many stories of his compassion and cooperation as an officer. He was known as a soldier of “integrity”. In his last tour of duty at Walter Reed, he served on a disability board listening to the many stories of the young soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. His fellow officers said he would often go up against the other officers defending the young soldiers and their families if he felt that they should get a higher disability rating. Throughout his career, as a husband and father, he served his family with unconditional love and support. He is truly missed by family, friends and fellow soldiers.
