Mission Statement and Officers
The African American Initiative for Scholarships was established in 2007 by the union of three groups who are devoted to the welfare of African American students and the University of Houston: the Black Alumni Association (BAA), the Black Leadership Network (BLN), and the UH Cougars Athletic Alliance (UHCAA). Our goals are to:
- Reconnect African American alumni and the greater African American community to the University of Houston.
- Provide scholarships to deserving African American students.
- Secure financial support from donors without diluting resources.
- Assist organizations that support the matriculation, retention, academic achievement, and degree attainment of African American students.
- Bridge donor interests with programs and service at the University of Houston.

The Path of Your Annual Gift
Scholarship Endowment (50% of the gift) Scholarship distributions from the endowment will be available after the endowment has been invested for a minimum of one year. Once interest is drawn from the endowment, the AAIS Governing Board, led by volunteers from each of the three groups and advised by Regent Calvin Stevens, will recommend a scholarship recipient, and The University of Houston Alumni Association (UHAA) Scholarship Selection Committee will award the funds.
Annual Scholarships (20% of each gift) The Annual Scholarship Fund is held as a general account with UHAA. On a designated annual basis, the amount collected will be equally divided among the three original groups for scholarships.
Annual Operations (20% of each gift) Each of the three original groups will equally divide these funds on an annual basis, to be capped at $25,000. any amount beyond that will be redirected to the Annual Scholarship Fund.
AAIS Marketing (10% of each gift) These funds will be used to further the efforts and provide marketing for AAIS and related programs. The marketing allocation may be accessed by the University of Houston Division of University Advancement.
