Mission Statement
The Communication Disorders Alumni Association is organized to strengthen the relationship of the communication disorders alumni of the University of Houston, as well as to advance the interest and promote the welfare of the University of Houston and the UH Communication Disorders Department.
History
1998 - After being part of the School of Communication for many years, Communication Disorders became a separate department within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and moved into its brand new building on Cullen Blvd.
1999 - With departmental status in place, COMD was eligible for its own alumni organization, and the Communication Disorders Alumni Association (COMD AA) was formed, with Sue Shirley-Howard as its first President;
1999 - The Department of Communication Disorders celebrated 50 years of service to the Houston community.
Accomplishments
The Communication Disorders Alumni Association has provided COMD student scholarships and continuing education programs for the Houston professional community:
- Visioning the Future in 2000
- New Assessment Tools in 2001
- Wine tasting/silent auction honoring Dr. Lynn Bliss in 2002
- Sale of Gold C Booklets
- Silent auctions during CEU events
- Raffle of electronic equipment in 2003
- Legal Issues Facing Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists in 2003
- Wine tasting/silent auction honoring Marty Adams and his wife Sheryl Jorgensen to raise funds for the Communication Disorders Speech and Hearing Clinic
- Hosting receptions for Communication Disorders graduates
- Endowed a scholarship for a graduate student in Communication Disorders;
- The first scholarship was awarded in September 2004.
- Wine and Jazz Gala honoring Dr. David Rosenfield
