2009 Distinguished Alumni Awards - PART1

More than 600 University of Hawai'i alumni and friends gathered on May 7 at the Sheraton Waikiki to honor the 2009 UH Distinguished Alumni Award honorees and benefit UHAA and its scholarship fund. This year's winners are Dr. Chiyome Fukino (MD '79); Dr. James (MA '69) and Dr. Lois (MA '69) Horton; Dee Jay Mailer (BS '75, MBA '85); and Sabrina McKenna (BA '78, JD '82). The UH Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Daniel Lau (BA '41). The UHAA President's Award was given to David and Wendie McClain. Engineering Centennial 2008
11/11/2008

Good food, good spirits and good company set the tone for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Engineering Centennial Homecoming Celebration on Oct. 7, 2008, at the Stan Sheriff Center. More than 600 alumni and friends of the college gathered to enjoy culinary creations from 12 well-known local chefs, including D.K. Kodama, Hiroshi Fukui and Donato Loperfido. Guests were also treated to a comical rendition of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" performed by none other than UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, who donned Turner's trademark mane. She was accompanied in good fun by UH President David McClain, Engineering Dean Peter Crouch, Warrior Head Football Coach Greg McMackin and the Foundation Vice President of Development Kathy Nelson. Homecoming Football & Letterwinners Award

During halftime at the Homecoming football game, UHAA presented its 2008 Community Service Award to the UH Letterwinners Club. The week closed the following day with a Wahine Volleyball game against New Mexico, where UHAA gave its Partner Recognition Award to AIG Hawaii.

UHAA Homecoming Tailgate at Aloha Stadium

On Oct. 11, 2008, alumni, Letterwinners and former football players partied at the UHAA Tailgate at Aloha Stadium, before cheering the Warriors to a homecoming victory over Louisiana Tech. Homecoming Rally on Bachman Lawn

UHAA Golf Tournament - Registration & Lunch

The 3rd Annual UH Alumni Association Homecoming Golf Tournament at Hawaii Prince Golf Course on Oct. 8, 2008, was hosted by the UH Army ROTC Alumni Association Chapter. As part of the UH Manoa Homecoming Week festivities, the tournament provided a unique opportunity to pay tribute to all UH alumni who have bravely served our country. Before the tournament, a short ceremony honored the six UH ROTC graduates who lost their lives in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan: Tom Blevins, Frank Rodriguez, Brian Kong, Jeremy Wolfe, Nainoa Hoe and Jonathan Brostrom. There was an official posting of the colors before tee-off, and Marlene Sai sang the National Anthem. UH ROTC cadets were on hand to assist with the event, and raised more than $6,000 for their club at the par 3 challenges. Kimo Kahoano emceed the opening ceremony and performed with his trio while the golfers enjoyed Kevin "Two-Boots" Tate's delicious gumbo before they teed off. Centennial Celebration with Distinguished Alumni - May 22, 2008

UHAA celebrated 100 years of distinguished alumni on May 22 at the Sheraton Waikiki. More than 40 of these esteemed UH graduates attended the Centennial Celebration with Distinguished Alumni that night, along with more than 400 other alumni and friends. UHAA-Japan Chapter Launch Celebration

More than 80 people gathered for the inauguration of the UHAA-Japan Chapter on March 30 at the Oakwood Premier Hotel in Tokyo. UHAA President Ren Hirose '85 and UH Foundation Vice President for Development Kathy Nelson traveled to Japan to take part in the event, and special guests included journalist and author Yoshiko Sakurai '69; Joyce Tsunoda '60, '65, emeritus chancellor of UH Community Colleges; and Greg Irwin '88, who was the emcee. Sugar Bowl - Alumni Suite - December 2007

The UHAA team set up a hospitality suite with Rainbowtique at the Courtyard Marriott in New Orleans. 2007 UH Mānoa Homecoming Football Game - Oct. 27, 2007

On Oct. 27, the UH Warriors defeated New Mexico State, 50-13, in front of a then-season-high crowd of 41,218 at Aloha Stadium on Homecoming. At halftime, UHAA presented its outstanding community service award to ʻAhahui Koa Ānuenue. UHAA members were offered 2-for-1 tickets to the game, as well as to the two winning women's volleyball games that weekend at Stan Sheriff Center. Photos by Stacia Garlach.

Nearly 10,000 Hawai'i fans traveled to Las Vegas to support the Warriors as they took on the UNLV Running Rebels on Sept. 15. That day, more than 2,000 Warrior fans attended a Boyd-sponsored UH pre-game tailgate at the California Hotel and Casino parking lot before heading to Boyd Stadium to cheer the Warriors to a rousing victory. 2007 UHAA Distinguished Alumni Awards

UHAA honored Tom Gill, Jay Shidler and Walter Kirimitsu at the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Awards (DAA) annual awards dinner on May 23 at the Sheraton Waikīkī hotel. Established in 1987, the award recognizes outstanding alumni who have used their UH education to excel professionally, provide inspirational leadership to others, and provide service for the benefit of the community.
