Capstone Project: Court-Annexed Mediation Program (CAMP): Resource Enhancements and Options for Continued Success

Presented by Dawn Prime Watson, RN, MPS, 2009
Moderated by Myra Isenhart, PhD, UCOL Instructor

  • What is a court-connected mediation program?
  • What do successful, sustainable models look like?
  • How can leaders in ADR better access and maximize resources for success?

Court-connected mediation programs provide citizens with resourceful options to litigation and over the past three decades have rooted themselves in every state in the nation. The Court-Annexed Mediation Program (CAMP) is a volunteer mediation program providing services to the county and small claims courts in Denver. Like similar programs across the nation, CAMP faces many challenges to continuing program services. The primary goal of this capstone project was to research options for continued success of the program. Accomplishing that goal involved analysis of government and nongovernment court-connected mediation programs and identifying hallmarks of successful, sustainable court-connected mediation program models.

If you would like to learn more about CAMP and court-connected mediation programs, please join us for this insightful presentation and discussion while enjoying a cup of coffee and pastry.

Coffee & Capstone is a series of seminars, often on Saturday mornings, showcasing University College graduate research on topics of interest to the community. Since 2003, UCAN-sponsored Coffee & Capstone seminars have provided UCOL graduates with a public forum for presenting their Capstone projects. The presentations give both the Capstone researcher and the Capstone project a platform for public exposure. Capstone advisors generally recommend outstanding capstone projects for consideration.

Be sure you are listed in the new DU alumni directory

The University of Denver is in the process of updating alumni information in order to ensure its 2010 Alumni Directory is as accurate as possible. To that effect, the University has hired PCI, a firm specializing in creating and publishing alumni directories to contact our alumni base. By now, you should have received a yellow postcard which reads "important alumni verification now due". You may have already received a yellow post-card from them with instructions on updating your information. You can also contact them directly at 1-866-618-8890 to ensure your information is accurate. Coffee and Capstone: Dynamics of Employee Engagement and Disengagement (November 1, 2008)

Carol Nadlonek during her presentation

In November, The University College Alumni Network (UCAN) held its first Coffee and Capstone of the 2008/09 Academic year in the Cyber Cafe at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies. Staff Performance Consultant for Qwest Carol Nadlonek presented her research examining employee engagement and disengagement.

Her Capstone analyzed the manager's and the employee's roles and responsibilities to fully connect and maintain personal engagement. She identified behaviors associated with employee disengagement as well as how an individual's job content, relationships, needs, and desires influence their behavior in the workplace.

Carol’s advisor University college professor Laura Belsten led a discussion following the presentation where Ms. Nadionek demonstrated techniques of behavior reinforcement during a brief one-on-one demonstration with a member of the audience.

She concluded her discussion by emphasizing that disengaged employees can be reengaged and become productive contributors to a business, and that engaged employees are not necessarily more loyal or productive.

Carol Nadlonek is a performance consultant at Qwest Communications, who has spent the last several years using the Gallup Q12 survey as a tool to drive employee engagement. Her continuing research explores the history of early behavior theories and leaders to present day research on employee engagement from a business perspective.

The UCAN Coffee and Capstone series showcases University College graduate research on topics of interest to the community in conjunction with the UCAN’s goal of combining the passions and purpose of University College alumni.
