Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the PartnersFirst VISA® affinity card and its relationship to Stony Brook's Alumni Association?

A: Many college and university alumni associations have affinity credit card programs that give alumni and friends the option of using a credit card bearing the name and logo of their alma mater. PartnersFirst is the issuing bank for the Stony Brook Alumni Association Rewards VISA® credit card. PartnersFirst is a part of Western Alliance Bank Corporation (NYSE: WAL) with over $4.5 billion in assets.

Q: What does our Alumni Association get out of this affinity card agreement?

A: First and foremost, we strengthen our relationships with alumni by offering them a valuable service. By acquiring and using the card, a portion of all your purchases will directly go back to benefit student scholarships, reunions, Homecoming, and more.

Q: Why is the Stony Brook Alumni Association promoting the use of credit cards, given our country's high rate of personal debt and low rate of savings?

A: Used wisely, credit cards are a convenient way to pay for goods and services. The Stony Brook Alumni Association Rewards VISA® allows responsible credit users the ability to support Stony Brook students and alumni while earning points towards free travel, merchandise, or even cash back. For help on how to manage your finances and protect your credit, visit www.practicalmoneyskills.com for advice, planning tools, a free monthly newsletter, and more.

Q: Does the Alumni Association or PartnersFirst market the card to students?

A: No. We focus our promotions on alumni and friends of the University.

Q: I already have a credit card from the former affinity credit card partner - Bank of America. Now what?

A: As of December 1, 2008, the Alumni Association announced its decision not to renew or extend its relationship with the Bank of America Platinum Plus MasterCard® credit card program. You may continue to use the card. However, your purchases will no longer provide any financial benefit to the Alumni Association or its programs.

Q. What are the key improvements in this new credit card offer?

A: Along with a 0 percent APR on balance transfers for the first six months, Stony Brook University Alumni Association Rewards VISA® credit card benefits include:

  • No Late Fee
  • No Over Limit Fee
  • No Statement Copy Fee
  • No Pay By Phone Fee
Plus, you'll earn 1 point for every dollar you spend, anywhere you shop, with the card. These points can be redeemed for round-trip airline tickets, gift cards at major retailers, and more - or you may choose to redeem your points for 1 percent cash back.

Q: Why did the Stony Brook Alumni Association choose PartnersFirst?

A: PartnersFirst offers Stony Brook alumni and friends both an industry-leading rewards program and a solid financial position.
