Can Stem Cells Help Repair Tissue in Heart Attack Patients?
In a clinical study involving 40 sites, including Stony Brook University Medical Center, doctors are using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to treat patients who have had a heart attack. "We hope that the MSCs will help the heart muscle recover following a myocardial infarction by reducing the inflammation, as well as repairing the damaged heart tissue," says Luis Gruberg, MD, Principal Investigator and Professor of Cardiology.

215 Million-Year-Old Dino Discovery
Alan H. Turner, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook is the co-author of the study of a new species of dinosaur that was recently found in New Mexico. Tawa hallae, a carnivore about 3 meters long was discovered at Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico.

Stony Brook grads attended a discussion panel on December 3, at JPMorgan Chase's Manhattan headquarters. The event was organized by Stony Brook's new Center for Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. More Photos.

Student Mentored at SBU
Wins National Siemens Competition
Ruoyi Jiang, a senior at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, was named the individual Grand Prize winner and awarded $100,000 in the prestigious nationwide Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Jiang conducted his research on chemotherapy drug resistance under the mentorship of Carlos Simmerling, Professor of Chemistry at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory. More.
9/11 Heroes Benefit from
New Long Island Facility
The brand-new World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program will provide much needed treatment to thousands of 9/11 first-responders who continue to suffer from asthma, pulmonary conditions, post-traumatic stress disorders, and other conditions related to their work at Ground Zero. Stony Brook University Medical Center proudly opened the new clinic, located in Islandia, on December 3.
