What is Toxic Drinking? SBU Has the Answer
'Red Watch Band,' a Stony Brook-led initiative designed for colleges, but
adaptable to other organizations, focuses on a comprehensive bystander intervention program to prevent toxic
drinking deaths. To date, over 100 Stony Brook students have completed the four-hour training, in which they learn to
recognize the signs of an alcohol emergency, how to administer CPR, and when to call for professional medical help.

13 Programs Ranked in the Top 50 of
America's Best Graduate Schools 2010
US News & World Report ranked 13 of Stony Brook University's graduate programs and 7 subspecialty fields among the top
50 programs in the nation. Some of the disciplines receiving top marks were clinical psychology (9), physics (23),
mathematics (24), nursing - midwifery (29), computer science (31), political science (33), sociology (41), and
medical school - primary care (45). Top Stony Brook subspecialty fields included nuclear physics (4), geometry (6),
and American politics (20).

Alumni Association to Honor Four Graduates
with 2009 Distinguished Alumnus Awards
Four of Stony Brook University's most outstanding alumni will be honored on Friday, November 20 at the Distinguished
Alumnus Awards Reception in the Charles B. Wang Center. The 2009 honorees include: Dr. Robert J. Frey, (BS '80, PhD '
87), Rear Admiral Dr. Steven K. Galson, (BS '78), Dr. Sally A. Lynch, (BS '82, PhD '88), and Dr. Margaret M. McGovern,
(BS '78). Look for a full profile of each of the DAA recipients in the next four issues of Stony Brook Matters.

Nuclear Physicist Elected to the Prestigious
National Academy of Sciences
Dr. Barbara Jacak, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been inducted as a member
of the acclaimed National Academy of Sciences. A professor of physics at Stony Brook since 1997, Dr. Jacak leads the
PHENIX Group, which studies nuclear matter using the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at the Brookhaven National
Laboratory. "Election to the National Academy is an incredible honor for me," says Dr. Jacak. "Perhaps more importantly,
it brings recognition to the exciting physics we are doing at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider."

On May 8, dozens of alums and friends enjoyed a full day of great golf under a blue sky at the beautiful Hamlet Willow
Creek Golf and Country Club, while raising over $27,000 for student awards and alumni programs and services. Thanks to

"Hobbit" Foot Is Completely Unique in Human Fossil Record
William Jungers, PhD is the lead author of a study recently published in Nature, examining the foot of the Homo
floresiensis skeleton, nicknamed the "Hobbit." Dr. Jungers, who is a Distinguished Teaching Professor and the Chair of
the Department of Anatomical Sciences, found that the foot has a highly unusual combination of human-like and ape-like
features, unlike any other fossil in the human fossil record.

Alum Makes a Splash with Pediatric Oncology Patients at Stony Brook
Wall murals of happy mermaids and dolphins frolicking in an underworld sea party of blue greet young cancer patients and
their families when they arrive at Stony Brook University Medical Center's pediatric oncology unit, thanks to dozens of
volunteer artists from Long Island nonprofit "Splashes of Hope," where alumnae Kym Mirabella '88 is a Board Member.
