HOW: (Please read!)
Books packed as if on library shelves are
rarely all the same height, making the box hard to fill completely;
books packed with the spines up are condemned to a much shortened
life, since the weight of whatever is on top of them helps
break the spines.Please
pack books lying flat in boxes, and pack the boxes as full
as is practical (boxes have to be stacked upon entry, and unfilled boxes make unstable bases).
We
particularly dote on file boxes (with lids) and Xerox copy paper
boxes (also with lids), but also recommend the boxes in which
bottled beer six-packs come (they are a reasonable size, often
have handle holes on the ends to make carrying them easier,
and have flaps for closing).
If possible, avoid very large boxes, which are too heavy to move when filled (think banana boxes, etc.). Additionally,
please do not tape boxes shut — removing tape is time-consuming
and slows the whole process to a crawl. Just tuck the flaps
into each other after the box is full.
QUESTIONS:
Should you have any questions, please
call the sorting center at 410-453-5510 at any time and leave
a message. You will unfortunately have to hear most of the information above if no one is there, but persevere and someone will call you back, probably within a day.
Thank you for thinking of the Smith Club as the best place to keep your books in circulation!
