This project grew out of a discussion about networking between alumni and current students of German. Professors David Tinsley and Kent Hooper have been maintaining informal contact and lists of addresses for years, but this information has never been organized - until now!

Jennifer writes: I am a first grade teacher at Whittier Elementary School in Fircrest,
just on the edge of Tacoma. I stay connected to UPS by working closely
with the Masters in Teaching program. I volunteer each year to take
students into my classroom for observation and experiences before they
complete their certification. I have great memories of class with Herr
Hooper and also Herr Tinsley. They were the classes that I felt most
at home in. I had been an exchange student in The Netherlands and took
German to continue my study of Germanic languages. While I was in the
MAT program at UPS, I was introduced to a German visiting some friends
for the summer. We hit it off and were married 2 years later! My
German has been a life skill rather than a career skill. We have 2
children that speak German and travel across the Atlantic is frequent.
I use my German everyday.

Mark writes: It's been a long time since my full year abroad in Passau
in 1991 - 92. I can't believe how time flies. I currently work as a
Senior Operations Manager at T-Mobile, USA. While a German company,
unfortunately my work only takes me as far as Puerto Rico. I try to
make it back to Germany every year or so, especially Berlin which I
love. I don't get to practice my German nearly enough, but I have fond
experiences of my time abroad, would love to stay in touch with any
folks in the area or further afield.

Molly writes: Graduated from the Army Dietetic Internship program in 1999 and served 3 years in the Army as a Registered Dietitian. Received Masters in Public Health from Portland State University in 2006. I am married and have two boys, ages 3 and 6. I am the project coordinator for the Community Health Initiative at
Kaiser Permanente. My work is focused on creating policies and
environments that promote healthy eating and active living to prevent
childhood obesity.

Andrea writes: I graduated in 2006 with a Biology major and German and
Chemistry minors. I remember countless hours in Herr Tinsley's office
getting help that first semester in German 201 but after lots of hard
work and incredible professor support, I proudly graduated with a
German minor. I lived in Colorado for a couple years after graduation
and worked at a Biotechnology firm. After getting married in 1998, my
husband and I took a 5-month honeymoon to Western and Eastern Europe
where I used my German quite a bit, especially in Turkey where German
was the second most popular language. German served me well on our
travels and I was thrilled to have that knowledge. In 2000, I attended
WSU where I got my Master's degree in Genetics and Cell Biology. After
graduate school, we moved to Woodinville, WA where I have taught off
and on and we started a family.

Claire writes: My time at Puget Sound was divided between school, sorority life (Kappa
Alpha Theta), the tennis team, the dance team, and the then-recently
formed dance troupe! I spent most of my junior year studying in
Freiburg, attempting to conquer the language, and loved every minute of
it. After graduation I spent some time traveling (and practicing
German!) and working before heading back to school for my law degree at
the University of San Diego. After law school graduation and a bit more
travel (another chance to use that German, so convenient!!) I began my
legal career in Los Angeles and now reside and work in San Jose,
California. I am happily married with a daughter who is almost 3 and my
son is just 6 months.

Janet writes: I only minored in German at Puget Sound because I thought I needed
a "practical" major to get a job. If you're still a student, I
encourage you not make that mistake! With virtually every job I have
applied for, it is my German minor that employers notice and ask
about. They are always intrigued by the somewhat unique field, and not
by my practical, and far more common, major field of study.
Studying German took me to the city of Freiburg in college, and
then back for a year in Bonn on the Congress-Bundestag Exchange for
Young Professionals after I graduated. Both experiences, but
particularly the year-long exchange, have had very significant impacts
on my life. You might say that they also had significant impacts on my
pocketbook, since they only furthered my wanderlust. Since my year in
Bonn, I completed a Masters and PhD in Educational Leadership and
Policy Analysis, and am now involved with starting a community college
in Bozeman, Montana.

Anne writes: FLIA was a great major and I had a marvelous time in Berlin during my junior year. I can't imagine a better city for a college student. I'm currently working on my PhD in American Religious History at the University of North Carolina. While I don't get to use my German frequently, it was a breeze to pass my reading competency exam and it's been very handy to be able to be able to read German works when all the translations are checked out from the library (plus, it really impresses your professors). The only downside is having my brain immediately translate everything into German when taking other languages. My classmates--if not the teacher--are used to me throwing random German words into presentations intended to be in Japanese.

Marta writes: I have many fond memories of UPS but perhaps the fondest
was my year abroad in Passau, Germany. To this day, I still consider my
year in Germany the best in my life thus far! Unable to find a job that
tied my passion for German with my interest in public policy, I have
utilized my different skills in a combination of capacities. Working in
the public sector since graduating with my Master's Degree in Public
Policy and German Literature, I have enjoyed working with a vast
variety of people. Upon moving to the East Bay when my husband started
his PhD program at UC Berkeley, I learned of the German School of San
Francisco where I am now starting my third year of teaching children
between the ages of 2 and 18. Though I never fancied myself a teacher,
I have truly enjoyed the little ones. While this allows me to keep my
German fresh, I do miss the more intellectually demanding German
courses that I took while at UPS and while completing my Master's
Degree. If only UPS were a little closer, I would love to audit some
classes!

Mary writes: After graduating from UPS in 2005, I spent a year living in
Nordrhein-Westfalen on a Fulbright, assistant teaching at a Gymnasium
in Bonn. I moved to Seattle in the summer of 2006, and have been
working for McKinstry Co., LLC, since August of that year. In October
of 2008, I was married to fellow Puget Sound alumnus Phil Edry. My

Liam writes: I graduated in 2009 with a Foreign Languages and International Affairs: German major. I spent my junior year abroad enjoying the Black Forest views in sunny Freiburg. I'll have fond memories of Stammtisch at E-9 and other German department events! Outside of Germany, I've been able to use my German while traveling all over the world (I think we can all agree: Germans are EVERYWHERE). I also manage this website, the idea for which emerged during a conversation with Professors Hooper and Tinsley about contacting alumni for job opportunities. After graduation, I got a job with Behringer, a pro audio company that makes mixers, amplifiers, speakers, and musical instruments, to name a few of our many products. I do international technical and warranty support for our European clients, which allows me to speak and write German on a daily basis! I'd love to get in touch with alumni in Germany or people who have gotten a career where they have the opportunity to speak German.
