The Class of 2005 celebrated our graduation with a week of partying. On Monday, June 6, about 70 of us made the drive to Sam Kennedy’s house in Cumberland, ME. We grilled food, lit a huge bonfire, and camped out in tents on his lawn – it was perfect. The next day, Kaitlin Alsofrom held a party at Grand Isle State Park on Lake Champlain in Burlington, VT. About 60 classmates showed up to camp there for the night – when they were surprised by police at around midnight! The biggest, baddest bash of them all, as I understand it, was Jane Waterfall’s. Over one hundred classmates flocked to Jane’s house in the Hamptons. The party was a success – nobody got in trouble and a record number of people crammed into the hot tub! Harry Goldstein topped off grad week with a party at his house in Chicago. Kyle Kucharski, Alex Lebow, Jordan Nottke, Nate Scott, Christian Vareika, and I flew to Chicago while Lauren Seno and Helen Chacon drove there all the way from the East Coast to meet up with Windy City residents Harry, Lindsay Baker, Sarah Chang, Martin Donohoe, and Katie Hunckler. Also attracting Andover 05ers to Chicago this summer: the Lollapalooza music festival. Lollapalooza 2005 took place in Chicago’s Grant Park on July 23 and 24 – which happened to be two of the hottest days in Chicago in a decade – and featured artists like Weezer, the Killers, and the Pixies. Wale Adedokun, Lindsay, Sarah, Martin, Katie, Brittany Kaiser, Catalina McCallum, Anthony Reyes, and Lauren attended the festival, and a photograph of Sarah, Catalina, and Anthony even found its way into the Chicago Tribune and onto CNN.com! Elsewhere in the Midwest, Clarissa Deng attended a White Sox game with Franklin Davison and Sarah Hong. Paul Kim, Bobby Spang, and Grant Yoshitsu flew to Wisconsin to visit Victor Miller. While there, they caught a Brewers game with Wale Adedokun and Lauren Seno. Kelly Stecker, recovering from climbing Mt. Washington and training for the upcoming Harvard lacrosse season, relaxed with Catherine Hambleton in Chicago. And Morissa Sobelson went to Cleveland to visit Dan Adler, who was getting ready to go to the New England Patriots’ training camp. In New York City, Juli Min interned at Heavy Melody Music, a recording studio. Jesse Seegers also interned at a recording studio in New York City. At different times throughout the summer, Matt Brennan, Nate Greenberg, Katie Purcell, and Aimy Tsao stayed at Jesse’s Manhattan home. Also in New York City, Monique Francis interned at Lizzie Grubman Public Relations. And Kenechi Igbokwe worked for Citigroup, played basketball, and hung out with Winston Shaw and Yendi Linares. Several classmates did good this summer – just a minute, grammar hounds. Kat Dix and Jack Thorlin worked at PALS in Andover. Lindsay Baker repaired houses in Kentucky. Alex Lebow worked at Work Inc., a rehabilitation center for people with mental disabilities. Morissa Sobelson lived in D.C., working for the Global Fund for Children. She stayed with Jon Weigel in Lincoln, Mass. to give a presentation on AIDS in Africa at PA’s Summer Session. Ayo Adesanya, after traveling with his dad to see family in Nigeria, went to Los Angeles to be a group mentor for the A Better Chance orientation. Robert Hsu interned for international volunteering agency Cross-Cultural Solutions, earning credit for a trip next year, to either Peru or Tanzania. And Chelsea Paige lived in Thailand working for a company called Rustic Pathways, which organizes community service and adventure trips for high school students. Also in Asia, Jenn Davis studied China and Chinese at East China Normal University in Shanghai for six weeks. Andrew McGowan spent eight weeks in China studying the language and culture. He’s in his senior year at William and Mary, where he’s studying physics and metaphysics and lifting weights – so far he holds 5 world records in the All-Rounds and a Powerlifting State Championship! Another classmate athlete plying her trade at the world-level: Liz Demers. Liz rowed with the junior national team at the World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. Liz’s US team finished fourth, just missing the bronze – not bad! Other classmates spread out across Europe. Diana Grace, Alison Murphy, and Vanessa Parkinson de Castro studied French in Paris. Kate Ireland saw them in between stops at Dublin and Berlin, and Ciarra Schmidt spent some time with them – after bumping into Kelly Stecker in Florence, Italy! Henry Manice and Steve Sherrill, attending a program in the south of France, also stayed with Diana, Alison, and Vanessa in Paris. Erin Coleman visited her SYA host family in Italy. Natalie Ho went on a cruise in the Baltic Sea. Dan Hackney lived in Germany, studying German, to prepare for being an exchange student in the city of Herbstein this year. Nick Barrett visited 12 European countries in fourteen days. Harry Goldstein and Sam Kennedy are spending this fall in Dijon, France as part of a Colby College program. And Julian Dames, Yannick Janin, William Riordan, and Stephen Severo spent their summers living large in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the French Riviera. Julian, Yannick, William, and Stephen were among a number of classmates who took vacations together. Immediately following graduation, Will Allen, Alex Bois, Nicole Crocker, Franklin Davison, Elia Herrera, and Kaia Lubanko went to the Bahamas. Nicole Amaral, Sly Boumil, Dan LeClerc, Cassie Ornell, and Jack Thorlin spent a weekend at Lauren Blas’s house in New Jersey. Ayo Adesanya, Kendra Allenby, Franklin Davison, Temi Devers, Jason Duffett, Melanie Kress, Natasha Midgley, Cristian Monterroza, Jason Saunders, Winston Shaw, and Angela Tenney spent time in Capetown, Grahamstown, and Johannesburg, and in between performances watched shows, shopped at bazaars, and went on a safari. Matt Brennan, Anne Sharp, Sarah Donelan, JeanMarie Gossard, Andy St. Louis and Pat Shannon attended a belated graduation party at Chris Zegel’s house in East Falmouth, Mass. Chris also spent a week in Florida with Megan Scarborough. Steve Rolecek hosted Nate Kellogg, Brendan McManus, Dave Wilkinson, and I at his house on Lake Champlain, in South Hero, Vt. Lee Rotenberg spent June sailing in the Bahamas with her father. Kojo DeGraft-Hanson and Sheena Hilton hung out in their home state of Georgia. Many classmates got down to work. Natalie Exner worked at Creative Arts in her (and my!) hometown of Reading, Mass., where Julianne Fitzpatrick was a Starbucks barista. Laura Sciuto was a waitress at the 99 Restaurant in Andover. Shawn Fu did some freelance event photography and wrote for indie music website avoidthescene.com. Lola Grillo worked at Merrimack Valley MRI, helping with patients who came in for scans. Andy St. Louis worked at a coffee shop and as a bellboy at a hotel in Martha’s Vineyard, where he entertained at different times CC Donahue, Alex King, Sam Lederfine Paskal, Katie Minott, Beryl Sinclair, Amy Sticklor, and Laurel Sticklor. Peter Accomando and Jay Geary worked at a day camp in Salem, N.H. Ben Grant spent seven hours a day on the tennis court as a counselor at Windridge Tennis Camp in Craftsbury Common, Vt. Beau Freker, Sam Kennedy, and Mac King worked as counselors at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine, where they made boys into men by leading wilderness trips and, in Mac’s case, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince seminars. Andrew Dean played summer basketball. Jamie Durkin played baseball for the North Chelmsford Legion team and hopes to play for Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Steve Rolecek worked out in Arizona at Athletes' Performance, a training facility for collegiate and professional athletes, to prepare for hockey at Harvard. Megan Winn played for a summer softball team called the Tampa Mustangs to prepare for Rochester's volleyball and softball teams. And Neville Williams spent his summer in a cast, healing from a persisting cluster soccer injury. Meta Weiss attended a music camp called Yellowbarn Young Artists Program weeks in Amherst, Mass. Brittany Kaiser, Beryl Sinclair, and Pat Shannon went to see her perform. I spent my summer working in Cambridge (where Mark Shvarstman dropped in for lunch) and hanging out in Andover. Nate Scott was the valiant host of a month-long, decadent splurge, entertaining regulars CC Donahue, Jon Hillman, Ben Hoerner, Kyle Kucharski, Brendan McManus, Bobby Spang, Amy Sticklor, and myself. Guest appearances were made by Peter Accomando, Marc Asch, Nell Beattie, Alex Doty, Jamie Durkin, Elias Feghali, Andrew Geraghty, Alex King, Nate Kellogg, Alex Lebow, Sam Lederfine Paskal, Tom Levesque, Charlotte MacMillan, Chris Magnin, Katie Minott, Bridget O’Sullivan, James Paolino, Steve Rolecek, Laurel Sticklor, Jess Taggart, Cassie Tognoni, and Christian Vareika. I can’t imagine a better way to spend the summer after my graduation! Whew. One down, 19 to go. I hope they’re all this fun!
