Getting Involved
You're automatically a member just by virtue of being an E.W. Scripps School of Journalism graduate. Getting involved in this organization means you will help students at Ohio with career advice and give insight on entering the professional job force. Every little bit of effort helps-- you could post a blog post to our blog, or participate in one or more of our programs like our annual Senior Saturday event.
The alumni society wants to expand its reach to alumni, offering more services and offering opportunities for alumni to network and gain knowledge. To do it, we need help from as many Scripps graduates as we can. Being involved can be as simple as putting your name in an alumni contact directory or volunteering to attend events with current students. If you are interested, please contact chapter president Mike Ramsey and express your interest in doing more.
How SAF Can Help You
SAF
is your conduit for giving back to and staying connected to the
journalism school. For example, if you have an idea for programming,
outreach or otherwise, let us know. We also can put in you in touch
with other alumni, students and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism
faculty. And, it can serve as a credible network for you as you seek
new colleagues or new positions in new cities.
Chapter History
The Society of Alumni and Friends is an organization dedicated to enhancing the relationships among alumni, faculty, staff and students of the School of Journalism. The Society provides programming to encourage the development of these relationships. The Society of Alumni and Friends is an alumni chapter for the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. The Society was given its formal charter on March 7, 1997, by the Ohio University Alumni Association. This organization is an official component of the alumni association.
Activities
The Society of Alumni and Friends (SAF) has several programs and activities to help build a bridge between Journalism alumni and current students. To facilitate opportunities for students to learn from alumni's ``real-world'' experiences and knowledge, the Society has created these specific initiatives:
SENIOR SATURDAY: This annual event provides Senior students with advice, tips, one-on-one consultations and other valuable information through panel discussions and workshops led by Scripps alumni. The day is focused on getting a job in the current job market and succeeding during the first year on the job and beyond. This year's event was Feb. 16 and drew 109 graduating seniors, the most ever.
NETWORKING GUIDE: Students use this guide to obtain information about jobs, get the scoop on the advantages and challenges of working for a particular type of organization and make contacts in their hometowns and elsewhere. SAF's Key Contact Guide, which provides a city-based listing of more than 100 former Scripps students who are eager to help current ones find jobs, internships, housing and more, helps students tap the brains of experienced OU alums. Contact Mike for a copy.
SAF BLOG: We have a Society of Alumni and Friends blog where we post job openings and thoughts and stories that are of interest in the journalism field. Alums are encouraged to check it out and make their thoughts known. The blog can be found at http://scrippssaf.blogspot.com.
SPEAKERS BUREAU: Throughout the year, SAF and Scripps faculty and staff may be looking for speakers for classroom lessons, student organization events and school programs. Our organization maintains a listing of alumni willing to serve in this capacity and helps match the appropriate alumni with events and programs that suit their interests.
