For the 20th consecutive time, the Mt. SAC Flying Team has won the Top Two-Year College Award at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's (NIFA) regional airmeet. The team will now advance to the national competition after its second-place overall finish at the regionals at Brackett Field. With 192 points, Mt. SAC placed second behind first-place Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University from Arizona and ahead of third-place San Diego Christian College. Ninety-five students from six colleges competed at the 2011 Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON), a competition for university and community college flying teams.
In addition to the Top Two-Year School Award, Mt. SAC won the tournament's Sportsmanship Award. Mt. SAC students also won a total 29 individual awards, including Kate Darwin's (San Dimas) Top Female Pilot Award, David Calleros's (Montclair) first place in the aircraft preflight inspection, Rick Palkovic's (Glendora) first place in the flight simulator competition, and Darwin and Ian Doolittle's (Moreno Valley) first-place win in the crew resource management event.
The national SAFECON airmeet will be hosted by Ohio State University on May 16-21, 2011.
