Rememberence of Ed Nagy, RA on Carlin 3 during freshman year from his wife Deborah in response to letter from Bill McGovern
September 17, 2007
When Ed and I met at Rice University during his first semester there, and for many years afterward, he talked often of the group of freshmen he and Jim Sharp shepherded though their first year. He clearly cherised those memories of your time together in Carlin, and I know he never forgot them or you.
Ed later entered the Ph.D. Program in history at the University of Georgia which later led to Ed working for Senator Sam Nunn, as legislative assistant, and then press secretary and speech writer (1980-1985). Ed later served as chief of staff for Tim Valentine, U.S. Rep./ North Carolina (1985-1995), and directed four successful re-election campaigns.
Ed's life took some interesting turns after he came to Capitol Hill. He had completed all the course work toward his Ph.D. in history and had started on the research for his dissertation when he began working for Sam Nunn. The Ph.D. was never completed, but he spent the next fifteen years immersed in politics which he loved.
Then later on as Executive Director of the newly-formed Academy of Radiology Research, he was instrumental in the founding of the newest Institute of Health at NIH. The "Edward C. Nagy New Researcher Award" has been established at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering to promote new research in radiology in recognition of his service there. Ed has received numerous other posthumous awards from various medical associations that are indebted to him for his contribution to future radiology research; in fact, I will be making a trip to Chicago in November, 2007 to accept another award on his behalf. Ed nver abandoned his love of history, but I am sure he never expected that it would lead to his having a profound and lasting impact on the future of medicine!
As you surmised, Ed had an extraordinary influence on a great many people after he left Holy Cross. Those who worked with him had the greatest love and respect for him, and he changed many lives for the better. He was a devoted husband and father, and I am truly blessed to have shared thirty-three years with him.
This past August 25, our two childredn and I joined Ed's mother and brother (and his brother's family) in New York for the "inurnment" od Ed's ashes in the Catholic cemetery where Ed's father and gradparents are buried. I remain close to this family and visit them often, and it is a comfort to them and to me knowing that he is back home.
Again, I am grateful to you for sharing your memories of Ed with me. I will, in turn, share your letter with Ed's mother, knowing that she will find comfort in your kind words about him.
Deborah Nagy
