Welcome to the Class of 1991's new homepage. We hope that you will find this site helpful, especially when making plans to attend next year's 15th year reunion which will be June 2, 3 and 4, 2006. Please bookmark this site and check back often for updates!
Yes, finally, the warm weather and sun have arrived in the Northeast for good! As Memorial Day weekend is upon us, it?s amazing to think about the Friday before Memorial Day just 14 short years ago. The celebration of 4 years of hard work, dedicated service, and lots of memories. It?s important to reflect on history to understand it?s impact on your future. This year?s Holy Cross commencement speaker was Tim Russert, managing editor and moderator of NBC?s Meet The Press. In his bestselling memoir, Big Russ and Me, Russert writes with fondness and appreciation of his Jesuit education. He is a graduate of Canisius High School in Buffalo and John-Carroll University in Cleveland. Hopefully, we too remember our days at the Cross with admiration and joy and recognize the role it played in shaping our lives.
Speaking of our own graduation, next year is our 15th Reunion. Mark June 2, 3 & 4, 2006 down in your calendars. We are looking forward to another great meeting of the Class of 1991. Of course, we need volunteers to help personalize our weekend and to help write guest letters over the next year. Interested in serving on the Class Mass Committee, the Reunion Entertainment Committee, etc.? Contact the Holy Cross Alumni office at (508) 793-2415; tcadigan@holycross.edu. Consider what you might want to work on to help make this a special time for all.
In preparation of our 15th Reunion, Kristin, John and I are pleased to announce that John Figge and Kathleen (Maggi) Krieg have agreed to assume the roles of Co-Gift Chairs for our Reunion. Both individuals bring a high degree of enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and we are very fortunate that they have agreed to help our class achieve new records for 15th Year Reunion giving. I am sure we will hear more from them in the near future.
Finally, while the excitement and focus may be on next year, we are still working towards achieving our goal of 50% class participation for this year?s Annual Fund. We ask that you take the time to make your contribution early to give Kristin, John and me fewer people to reach out to over the last few weeks of the month. We already have 22% participation, and we are just about 150 donors short of our goal. Please help us and the College out with your continued support. Once again, you can mail it in to the Fund Office or go right on-line to www.holycross.edu/campaign . Thanks in advance for your help.
Without further ado??..

Archived Letters
Dear Classmates,
The first snowfall hit New England a few weeks ago, pre-Thanksgiving. An unexpected six inches of Mother?s Nature?s finest snow fell over a 36-hour period blanketing the region, frustrating commuters and non-commuters alike. As much as I have always loved the snow, there is something to be said about living in a warmer climate. But, I really cannot complain too much?at least this year?now that the Boston Red Sox are baseball?s World Champions.
With the last class letter in June, the Class of 1991 entered into uncharted waters. In addition to the traditional snail mail approach via the U.S. Postal Service, the Development Office also e-mailed the June letter to classmates that had provided e-mail addresses to the College. Pete, Kristin and I received some positive feedback, so we are going to continue with the practice. If you would like to have your e-mail address added to the distribution list, please contact Tom Cadigan ?02 at Holy Cross at tcadigan@holycross.edu, or go to the Holy Cross website and submit a greenslip http://www.holycross.edu/departments/alumnidev/online/keep_gre.html.

II. News from Worcester
From time to time, I come across Worcester-related news stories in the Boston Globe. For those of you outside the Worcester area, I thought you might find these two particularly interesting.
Worcester Centrum is now the DCU Center
From an October Boston Globe, ?Digital Federal Credit Union, a fast-growing alternative to traditional banks, said it is buying the naming rights to Worcester's Centrum Centre. The $5.2 million, 10-year deal renames the building to DCU Center. The signs are expected to be changed by the end of the year. DCU, based in Marlborough, has been aggressively raising its profile with television, radio, and print ads in recent months. It recently launched a set of ads that encouraged consumers to "Think beyond the bank."
Waking up Worcester: Officials, investors hope $300m plan sparks a revival
By Thomas C. Palmer Jr., Globe Staff | June 30, 2004
WORCESTER -- An urban shopping center didn't work. An outlets mall didn't either. But a new, $300 million plan to transform Worcester's half-empty downtown retail and parking complex into a thriving residential and commercial neighborhood may be the spark that the city has been seeking for 30 years.
That's the hope of city officials and Berkeley Investments Inc. of Boston, which this month purchased the sprawling 20-acre Worcester Common Outlets site for $30.3 million. Berkeley plans to build 900 condos and apartments, 450,000 square feet of office space, and 300,000 square feet of stores -- about half the retail space that now exists.
"This is a new, vibrant mixed-use project," said Young K. Park, president of Berkeley Investments. "It will be a catalyst for a revival of the entire downtown."
Worcester residents have heard that last part before. But Berkeley's first entree into this city -- expected to be accompanied by an estimated $50 million in public money -- comes at a time when a half-dozen significant improvement projects are underway.
"We do not believe one new project is going to be the panacea," said Philip J. Niddrie, chief development officer of the City of Worcester. "What we're trying to do is have a series of projects that play off each other."
New Worcester Center will have 3,700 parking spaces, 300 fewer than exist in the gigantic curved white garage that dominates the east side of the city today. That reduction reflects one aspect of what is considered efficient, modern development -- putting housing near public transportation and businesses. In this case that would mean improving access for new residents to nearby Union Station, which reopened in 2000 after a $38 million renovation and has 10 round-trip trains to Boston daily.
Last week, a day after Berkeley celebrated its purchase of the outlets complex from CIGNA Investments Inc., ground was broken on a $3.6 million intercity bus terminal that will be part of Union Station.
And that's not all:
Worcester Common, adjacent to the outlets, is getting a $6.5 million facelift by the city to make it friendlier to pedestrians, including hundreds of future residents.
Two blocks north of the outlets, the state broke ground last week on a 400,000-square-foot courthouse that abuts Main Street.
And, next door, Fargo Management LLC of Springfield is planning to break ground in August for a $22 million, 200-room Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel will connect to Worcester's successful Centrum Centre arena and convention center.
A new 500-car, five-story parking garage is planned near Union Station, serving commuters and patrons of the restaurants and shops that officials plan to lure to a handsomely restored but almost vacant train station. The station has only two substantial tenants, the Union Blues jazz and blues club and a restaurant, with room for many more.
City officials are paying Sasaki Associates Inc. $160,000 for what they call an economic development action agenda. The recommendations, which have already incorporated Berkeley's plans for the outlets complex, are to be released early next month.
"The big concept here is to reintegrate that area into the fabric of downtown," said Park. Half of Front Street was eliminated in the early 1970s, when the Worcester Center Galleria mall was built, and it will be restored.
The semicircular parking garage will be lopped off, and a medical office building added. An underground garage of 1,000 cars will be built to restore some of the eliminated spaces.
The decision to get rid of a large part of the garage that walls the entire area off from Union Station and the city's growing eastern portion is a big victory, said Alex Krieger, chairman of Chan Krieger & Associates, which made a similar recommendation as part of a Worcester renewal plan about 10 years ago.
"That was the last time Worcester tried to pick itself up by its bootstraps," Krieger said yesterday. No one thought people would want to move to Worcester's depressed downtown 10 years ago. But today there's demand. Niddrie said almost 70 percent of prospective home buyers in the Worcester area are from Boston and its western suburbs -- drawn in part by the increased train access to Boston. Worcester officials hope that the 10 round-trip trains will increase to 18 soon.
National Development of Newton is building a $40 million luxury apartment complex, Arbor Point, near the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park, a little over a mile from downtown.
The idea of the Worcester Center Galleria, planned in the 1960s, was to serve residents in a region that was devoid of the kinds of malls that had drawn life from cities elsewhere. Filene's, Jordan Marsh, and Kennedy's all moved off of Main Street and into the new mall.
As malls with acres of parking were put up in quick succession in Auburn and the Greendale section of Worcester, to the north, the Galleria ceased to draw patrons.
"That was the beginning of the deterioration of commercial Main Street activity," said Niddrie.
Filene's left in the 1980s and located later in Auburn. Jordan Marsh followed Filene's out the door. New England Development purchased the site and opened the Worcester Common Fashion Outlets in 1994. But the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets soon drew customers from a market Worcester thought was its own.
The stores that lease space in New Worcester Center, to be built in phases over the next five to seven years, will be a combination of modest-sized stores and shops, catering mostly to the local population and -- unlike past concepts -- not dependent on thousands of shoppers driving into downtown.
North of the new courthouse and hotel is an 11-acre brownfields site that is being developed into Gateway Park, a 1-million-square-foot bioresearch park and mixed-use project, by Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the Worcester Business Development Corp. The first building is expected to open in 2006.
If new regulations are approved next month by a council created by the Legislature, municipalities will be able to issue bonds for expensive improvements within designated districts and pay them off with taxes from developments that are generated.
Worcester is expected to be the first city in the Commonwealth to take advantage of the new financial opportunity.
III. Holy Cross Fund and Other Fundraising News
As you may recall, in the last days of June, Pete, Kristin and I were sending e-mails to you counting down the 1991 HC Fund donor gifts in hopes of reaching our 50% goal. We want to thank all of you who gave to the Fund and let you know our final results.
The Class of 1991 fell just a bit short of 50%. Our Class Total Giving (restricted, HC Fund, etc.) was at 48% - just 11 donors short of 49.5% participation -- which would have rounded up to 50%. Our Class Total Giving (restricted, HC Fund, etc.) was $73,519.
We actually had a few last second gifts made just after the time deadline that will give us a strong start for The 2005 HC Fund. The HC Fund as a whole finished just over $6.8 million dollars, from 49.6% of alumni.
Looking ahead to the 2005 Fund (which runs from July 1, 2004to June 30, 2005), Pete, Kristin and I again will be working hard to get to our goal of 50% class participation. Don?t wait until June. Make your gift online today by going to: https://webapps.holycross.edu/gifts.
In other fundraising news, in an effort to keep the football program competitive with other Patriot League Schools, the College has cleared the way for the establishment of a fund that will provide the football program with additional resources. Alumni, parents and friends who wish to contribute directly to football will become members of the Crusader Gridiron Club. Gifts will be for current use by the team and will go toward coaching salaries, equipment, travel expenses, the recruiting budget, computer and video systems, and the financial aid budget.
Alumni, parents and friends who are interested in supporting Crusader Football may contact Phil Gibson ?95 in the development office at (508) 793-2667 or by email at pgibson@holycross.edu.
III. SAVE THE DATE! 15th Reunion: June 2, 3 & 4, 2006
That?s right, our 15th Reunion is only 18 months away, and your class chairs have already started working with Holy Cross to begin the planning process. Because many (if not all) of us are knee-deep in careers, family and life, Pete, Kristin and I felt that starting the communications and planning process earlier would benefit everyone.
As in past reunions, we are looking for volunteers to help us with guest letter writing, reunion weekend festivities and fundraising. If you are interested in lending a hand, please contact one of us:
For the Reunion, one area that we?d like to develop is our use of the Internet. The collection of ?91 e-mail addresses is a first-step. We also would like to set-up a class web site. Some classes have already done this and they report good results. (As an example, visit the Class of 1964?s: https://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/HYC/cpages/chapterpage.jsp?chapter=9&org=HYC.) If there are any professional or aspiring web-site designers out there, we?d welcome your help and leadership in making this happen.
More on our 15th Reunion in upcoming letters.
To close, on behalf of Peter and Kristin, let me wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and happy holiday season. May the new year be filled with good health, happiness and prosperity for you and your families.
Sincerely,
John Hayes ?91
