Classmate Profile

(3/21/09)

Name: Kernahan Buck, aka Kern

State of Residence:  Massachusetts

E-mail address:  Buck6842@Yahoo.com

Family information:   Married to Jody Fiore Buck (Drew ’73).  Two children.

Occupation:  Attorney

Proudest accomplishments:

Jody and I are proudest of having raised two happy and inquisitive children.  Nothing compares to that.    On the professional side of things, I’m pleased to have practiced law for 30 years, initially in Washington DC, and in Boston now for 20 years.  I have a criminal trial practice.

Last time/Circumstance on the Holy Cross campus:

Next to Bob Cousy, I am one of the luckiest Holy Cross graduates because I now live near Worcester and go to the campus frequently.  I was there last weekend.  I even took a gamble and had lunch at the Miss Worcester for the first time in 39 years.  I do not recommend it these days.  It is not up to the standards established by short order cook Russ “back in the day.”   And over-priced now also.   Coney Island, on the other hand, offers the same excellent fare from our days of glory and I do recommend it.  If you like chili dogs and root beer … you have arrived.

My son and I attend hockey and basketball games at the Hart Center.

Favorite memories of Holy Cross:

Holy Cross vs. UCLA, Madison Square Garden.

Jim Courtney regaling all of Alumni I with his irrepressible caricatures of each of us.  Nobody was spared.

Other Information:

Tom Neagle has asked me to write about all the flying stuff.   My younger brother Rinker (Bowdoin ’73) and I rebuilt a Piper Cub in New Jersey the winter of 1965/66 and we flew it across the country and back the summer of ’66.  Rink even wrote a book about it, Flight of Passage, in 1998.  Rink is now a senior editor at the Hartford Courant.

Predictably, all the flying fun carried over to HC.  Mike Shoen, ’68 started a flying club in September, 1966, and 20 people joined, including eventually from our class my roommate Jim Mahon, Peter Kosel, Tim Crowe, Lou Bevilacqua, Mike Goode, Tim Neville, Dave Golia, and others I have surely omitted.  Father Maurice Reidy, S.J., who also had football team duties, got involved himself and started taking flying lessons, as did some of the other Jesuits.  Father Swords even flew with us one time, along with the Bishop of Worcester.   Jim Mahon did get to football practice on the top of the Hill by air.  It was in September, 1968.   We landed there another time as well.  I have flown over the campus many times in the years since.

Even with all the construction up in the vicinity of the Hart Center, there’s still enough room today  to wriggle between the treetops for a “touchdown”  (Sorry, it had to be said).   You have to consult Bruce Vinal’s photos first, and then get some advice from guys like Joe Belotti and John Corrado, who are two of the finest pilots around, and who have made careers safely flying passengers all over the world.

We received the following from our classmate Bill Santulli who with wife Joanne welcomed a new addition to his family - new daughter-in-law, Christina Leo who married their son Michael.  Both Michael and Christina are from the Holy Cross class of '03.

Here's Bill's note:

Hi Tom,

Attached are 6 pictures of my son Michael and his wife Christina's wedding at HC on 7/11/09. Feel free to use any of these on the class website.

Father Reiser, SJ, Professor of Religious Studies at HC was the celebrant. He was awesome. It was a gorgeous day and everything was perfect. The reception was held at the Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson, MA.

Enjoy,

Bill

Classmate Dave Smith and wife Kathy drove up from Philly to also cheer on the Crusaders against 'gate.

The Crusaders huddle at midfield before the game.

The Crusaders field the opening kickoff.

On the very first possession, the Saders have an impressive 2 play drive that goes for a TD on one of Dom Randolph's passes to Jon Brock that shocked the Raider fans and got the visitors' hopes up. Here place kicker Matt Partain kicks the extra point to go up 7-0.

The score at the end of the first quarter: HC 14 Colgate 7 and things are looking good.

It is halftime and the Saders have a 10 point lead over the home team.  What we didn't know at the time was this was the highwater mark for the Holy Cross team.  Colgate opened the 3rd quarter with a 10 minute possession ground attack for a score and it was almost all Raiders the rest of the way, winning by a point - 28-27. This was the third consecutive year finishing 7-4 and a second place finish in the Patriot League.

Class Letters

(11/7/09)

October 2009

Dear 1970 Classmates:

It is hard to believe it is already fall and another class of Crusaders (the class of 2013!) has arrived on the hill and is starting to get settled in, meeting their new roommates, and in many cases initiating relationships with classmates that will last a lifetime.

It’s 40 years ago that we, the Class of 1970, went through that same transition. So many of the friendships that were made during our four years on the hill have stood the test of time and are active to this day. Homecoming weekends, reunions and other college events help keep these bonds alive.

40th  Reunion – June 2010

Yes it’s that time again! The specific dates are June 11, 12 and 13. It seems like a long way off right now. But the planning will start shortly. Over the coming months we will be getting you the details of the times of the different events. For now just mark it on your calendar.

As many of you know, we kind of jumped the gun a bit and found an excuse to get our 40th reunion year off to a early start with the well attended 60th Birthday cocktail and dinner party in last Fall.

This Fall with the help of Mark Tooher and Gary Brackett we’re planning a Class of 1970 tailgate party prior to the Colgate game on October 24th to commemorate the lost “hepatitis” football season of 1969. We’re anticipating a nice turnout. On September 25th the Boston Globe carried a long article entitled “Crossed Out Season” about the whole sad saga of the events of that fall including quotes from several of our classmates. If you missed it, you can catch it on line at:

http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/football/articles/2009/09/25/crossed_out_season/?s_campaign=8315

Although the notice of this informal tailgate was distributed by email, the timing of this letter is such that it may reach many of you after that date has already passed. If you would like to avoid such timing issues in the future, just email us (at the email addresses listed by our signatures below) your current email address and we will be sure to get you on our class email list.

Class of 1970 Web Site

If you would enjoy staying in touch with the class by periodically checking in our Class web site, it is updated several times a year with news and pictures of our classmates. You can get there by going to www.holycross.edu, then clicking on:

1)      “Alumni and Friends”

2)      “Alumni Events and Programs”

3)      “Classes”, and finally

4)      “1970”

There are several photos from last Fall’s 60th birthday party posted on the site. If you have any pictures or updates to add, send them to Tom Naegle via email.

What’s Happening on the Hill

For those who have not visited the campus in the last few years, there have been a number of improvements to the college facilities. By far the most significant is the new science complex which dramatically integrates all the campus science buildings with one another. The first phase of the project is complete. A new four-story building that will be linked to the existing science and social science buildings on campus (Beaven, O’Neil, and Swords halls), began in the spring of 2007 and opened to classes and labs in January 2009. The second phase, a top-to-bottom renovation of Haberlin Hall, has begun. The 45-year-old building will be gutted and completely rebuilt, with an expected completion date of January 2010. Such improvements and additions help the college’s efforts to attract the top high school science students.

On a much smaller scale, there has been a renovation of the Kimball theater, a complete reconstruction of the lower tennis courts, and the addition of a new field turf field behind the Hart Center which will be used for football practice, lacrosse and other sports.

The football and basketball teams at Holy Cross are both looking forward to terrific seasons. The football team, led by All American quarterback, Dominic Randolph, is off to a fast start and will be contending for the post season playoff berth awarded to the winner of the Patriot League. The football team has not been to the post season in over 20 years and this year’ team has a real chance to break that streak. The New York Times ran a feature article on Randolph in their October 3rd print edition. If you missed it, you can go to the NY Times web site and retrieve it on line.

After 10 successful years, basketball coach Ralph Willard has moved on to work with his long time friend Rick Pitino at national power Louisville. He has been replaced by Sean Kearney who joins us after many years as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. There is an extensive article on coach Kearney in the current issue of Holy Cross Magazine. Expectations are very high for the upcoming season with a very deep and talented team returning. Featured early season match ups with St. Joseph’s, UNLV, George Washington and North Carolina State will be games to keep your eye on prior to the beginning of the Patriot League season in January. The much anticipated annual home game with Bucknell is scheduled for January 16th in the Hart Center.

2009 Annual Giving Results

Over the past six months we have heard about how the economy has impacted Holy Cross, just as it has affected each of us.  Despite the economic challenges, our class came through for the current students at Holy Cross.  We want to thank all of you who responded to our calls, e-mails, and letters by making a gift to Holy Cross in FY 2009.  The final numbers for our class reflect that 236 classmates (50% participation) contributed $112,143 to the Holy Cross Fund. If you include other annual gifts given directly to areas such as the Scholars Program and the Crusader Athletics Fund, our class donations total almost $200,000. Great job! Our dollars have a tremendous impact on campus, especially as income from the endowment is down, and requests by families for financial aid is up.  Please know that everyone on the Hill thanks you.  Enclosed, you will find a list of our generous classmates.  View the complete list of donors in the Report of Gifts at: www.holycross.edu/alumni/report

Some classmates have already “started the ball rolling” in contributing to the 2010 Holy Cross Fund. Many have found it convenient to donate on line with a credit card via the Holy Cross web site. As a reunion year, this is the opportunity for our class to give a special thanks to Holy Cross for the outstanding education it provided us all. Bill Walsh has generously agreed to serve as our Reunion Gift Chairperson. Details of our class gift planning will be sent to you in the near future.

Enjoy the rest of the Fall and upcoming Christmas Season. As noted above, circle the weekend of June 11th to 13th on your calendars. We’re hoping to get a great turnout of classmates to celebrate our 40th Reunion!

Best wishes,

Tom Neagle ’70                      Steve Bier ‘70

(3/29/09)

I received this e-mail as a reaction to the story below:

Thank you Jim for the story of Kern and the plane. For a short time, I was in the flying club with Kern trying to get me to stop bouncing off the runway in landing approaches until I ran out of money and had to improve the grades. Your story reminded me of Reading week that year with few people on campus and a pile of books to read. We took breaks to go to the basement of one of the buildings with Kern et al and worked on fixing the wings of the plane. Not much ventilation, a lot of wine and plenty of Tolulene from the glue on the repairs. High times at Holy Cross.

Cheers

Regards,

Jim Masciarelli

(3/17/09)

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!

I wanted share with everyone an e-mail that eventually found its way to me and suggested that it be posted on the class website.  Although it went through a couple of classmates before it reached me, the original author is classmate Jim Mahon and tells of event involving Jim and our classmate Kern Buck.  Kern has been practicing law in Boston since 1989. I think it speaks for itself but might bring back some memories for our football classmates:

Hi,

I was Kern's (Buck) roommate for 4 years at HC and played football.
Not only did Kern land an Aeronca Champ airplane on the football field, he did it during football season. I know this for a fact since I was a passenger in the airplane and Kern flew me to football practice that morning.

This stunt came about since the airplane which belonged to the now defunct HC flying club needed to have the old fabric on the wings replaced with new fabric. Lacking funds for a professional job the club members voted for the "do it yourself" variety. It was decided to do the job at HC so the problem became how to get the airplane wings from Worcester airport to the campus. Hauling the wings through the streets of Worcester seemed too blase for the flying club. So Kamakazi Kern volunteered for the job and I figured he needed a sidekick.

I remember it was a Saturday morning practice. Since we played games on Saturday it must have been either during preseason or a bye weekend. I forget which.
It was a no contact practice so we wore only shirts, shorts, cleats and helmets- no pads. When the team came off the practice field the night before I asked trainer Jack Scott if I could hold on to my equipment for the morning practice. I'm sure that it didn't make any sense to Jack but he was a good guy and went along with it.

Early the next morning Kern and I drove out to the Worcester Airport, indulged in the appropriate sake ceremony (note: Jim says this part was not true, just took some artistic license) , and took off.
At the time there were back to back football practice fields at the top of the campus. Our improvised landing strip was in the open grassy area adjacent to the practice fields, i.e. a little over 200 yards long. This was pre Fr Hart Athletic Center days.

Kern timed the landing perfectly. After buzzing the field to scare off any errant football players, coaches, etc. he brought the airplane in for a smooth landing just as Coach Boisture was blowing his whistle to bring the players together for his daily pre-practice pep talk which always started out "hey gang,,," somewhat similiar to LBJ's speech intro of "My fellow Americans...". After the airplane rolled to a stop I jumped out in my helmet, shorts, etc. and ran over to some stunned teammates and coaches.

This must have had some effect on my status with the team since a few weeks later I was switched from defensive end to linebacker and moved up to the starting defense in time for the Syracuse game!

Jim Mahon

(11/24/08)

Received from Jim Cosgrove:

Dear Tom:

Asst. District Attorney Larry Murphy, H.C. '70, was honored by Bishop of Worcester Robert J. McManus at the St. Thomas More Society of Worcester's Annual Red Mass yesterday as Catholic Lawyer of the Year.  See article in link below, which does not do him justice.

Larry has been a prosecutor in the D.A.'s office for more than 30 years, and for decades has been prosecuting the most serious offenses, including murder and rape cases.  He is a daily communicant and has moved in with his Mom, caring for her in her serious illness.  Larry's athletice prowess (member of Athletic Halls of Fame of both Holy Cross and St. Peter's High School in Worcester for his stellar hockey career) has been inherited by his three children, who are also extremely good students, one having graduated summa cum laude from college.

Larry has for many years kept a picture on his desk of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and emphasized yesterday that not one of the families he has helped over the years in the aftermath of a murder or other serious crime has ever asked that he remove or shield it.  As does he, he said, this is what they need to get them through the hardest times.

Larry is held in the highest regard by all his colleagues, including not only his fellow prosecutors but also defense counsel, many of whom attended the mass and brunch yesterday, which he found touching.  All know that he never seeks revenge or any unfair advantage, seeking only a just result and using Jesus Christ risen as his unfailing touchstone.  There has never been a more worthy recipient of the St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyer award.

Hon. Vito Virzi and his wife, Nancy, Jim Cosgrove, and perhaps other members of the class of '70, attended the mass and brunch, as did Msgr. Thomas J. Sullivan, Chancellor and Director of Fiscal Affairs for the Diocese of Worcester, class of '71

Edward A. Ready Sr.
WEST YARMOUTH - On Nov. 20, 2008, Edward A. Ready Sr. of West Yarmouth, passed away after a brief illness.

Ed was the loving husband of Kathleen Maseth-Ready, and devoted father to Edward A. Ready Jr. and Francis A. Ready of Massachusetts and New Orleans, La. He was also the husband of the late Nancy Gelini Ready. Ed was the stepfather to James Maseth and his wife Michelle of Pittsburgh, Pa., and stepgrandfather to Nathan and Sebastian Maseth.

Ed was president of E.A. Ready and Sons, a real estate and construction company on the Cape. He always had a keen eye for architectural detail and historic preservation. In 1998, Ed was awarded the Annual Preservation Award from the Barnstable Historical Commission for the restoration of his 22 Main St. house in Hyannis.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Ed graduated in 1966 from Oliver Ames High School, where he was a standout lineman for the untied 1964 Eastern Massachusetts Class C Tiger football team. He was not only one of the top prep linemen in New England, he was also one of the top high school shot putters as well. In his senior year, he received All Scholastic recognition from the Boston Print media, and was selected captain of the All Hockomock League team. In the shot put his senior year, he won a state class indoor title, set records in the Hockomock League and South Shore Principals Association outdoor track and field championships, finished third in the outdoor All State meet and sixth in the New England championships meet. Fittingly, in 2003, Ed was inducted into the Oliver Ames High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He went on to play football at College of the Holy Cross on full scholarship. He played four years for the Crusaders, earning two varsity letters and graduating in 1970. Ed also earned an MBA from Babson College graduating summa cum laude.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Ready Pikosky, and Frank Ready. He was the brother of Gail (Jack) Thomas, Linda Ready, Pat (Jack) McGuin, Susan Ready and Barbara (Seppo) Vakeva. Ed was the brother of the late John Ready. He was the brother-in-law of Charles and Floyd Gelini. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Throughout his life, Ed always looked around to help anyone in need. He was quick to encourage everyone and was a rock to us all. He had a loving and generous heart.

Ed loved his Holy Cross "Brotherhood" and relished the times they spent together. He enjoyed spending time with his childhood friends, Larry Dale and Phil Asack, watching Super Bowl games with John Farellely, and all of his "adventures" with his Holy Cross football captain, Dr. Mark Doherty.

Friends and relatives are invited to call Sunday, Nov. 23, from 3 to 6 p.m., at the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth. A funeral will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday from the funeral home, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Church, South Street, Hyannis. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund, c/o Cape Cod Times, 319 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601, or to Catholic Charities, 228 W. Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201-3413.
