The (Final!) Soper Report
Everyone -
Okay a few quick things: One, you don?t have too much time left to donate to the HC Fund for this year, so please click here and give something?anything. I don?t know if you have been paying attention, but this year there is the Ray Brutomesso Challenge. Basically if we as a school can reach 51% giving, he gives the school an insane amount of money. I mean ludicrous. So much so, that Park B. Smith might get angry, sell a few bottles of his vintage wine to generate some more cash, and then donate enough to name a new building after himself to challenge Ray. Seriously - these rich guys are very competitive. So please take a moment and click on this link. I?m begging you. http://www.holycross.edu/alumni/support/gift.html
Secondly, after 4 or so years, I have decided to ?retire? as class chair. Take that in?or not. I can imagine the gigantic ?Who cares - did we even graduate with you? And even if we did, you were never as good as Roland? response coming from the Class of ?99. And to you readers, I say yes, I did, and you?re right.
Honestly, I can say that my peek behind the curtain of the HC administration has been revealing. Like many of you, I questioned the yearly solicitation for money and whether or not the money was actually going to benefit the students as much as they said. Through updates, meetings, and conversations with the administration, I can tell you that we have an incredibly dedicated staff of individuals who work for Holy Cross. They are fully focused on creating the best possible institution for students and alumni to be proud of. So I want to thank you, Gary and KeriAnne, as well as my fellow co-chairs, the incomparable Meg Devine and the new chairs Tim and Matt. It has been a rewarding experience.
Lastly (really is anyone even still reading this? Whatever - last column - I do what I want), with my retirement, I get to look forward to a life where my wife and friends aren?t always wondering/ worrying about whether or not I am going to put random details and achievements of their lives into the newsletter when I didn?t have enough updates. Let me state: That time is over. Friends of Meg, Tim, and Matt - be warned.
So Kevin Toomey, who married Mary Ann Gill ?98 last month, and all other HC alums that attended - worry not. Kevin your singing was incredibly awesome - but no one but those of us there need to know it. Bill Werner and Tom Maher - your dancing skills are memories I will have forever.
Andy Adams - don?t worry about me reporting on your upcoming move to London with your lovely wife Tosh.
Ed Teagan and Brendon Passikoff, aka ?The New Jersey Boys?- looking forward to getting together next weekend with the wives. Just know our conversations stay between us.
Lisa Hargadon - congrats on the new job and the move to NY - good to have you here.
Keri (Giglio) and Mike Maguire - congrats on the job and the move to Toronto.
Mike Bourque - Congrats to you and your wife Emma and your new house outside of DC. I can?t believe a guy I slept under for 4 years is actually a CFO now.
Lou Ryan - good to have you back in the country and congrats on your upcoming wedding to your fianc?, Colleen.
I think I am rambling again - sorry. Anyways - Have a great summer everyone!

McDonough?s (First) Memo
Hello Friends,
Now that I have finalized my class chair contract negotiation with Meg Devine and Tom Soper, I am happy to announce that I?ll be one of the people calling you to solicit photos of your weddings, stories about your lives and support for Holy Cross. By the way, I can?t believe the perks they give us for this job. Unlimited access to lower Kimball, free membership to the Hart Center fitness club and open bar at the Pub; I got everything on my demand list. And I only have to drive 47 miles each way.
Just to prove I wouldn?t ask someone to do something I am not willing to do myself, here is the readers digest version of post-HC Matt McDonough: I went to law school at Boston College. At BC Law I fell head over heels in love with a double Eagle named Suzanne who is a world class Irish Step Dancer. We bought a house in Marshfield, MA and are getting married at BC in October. Sorry about all the BC references. For the record, I drew the line when she wanted to paint our home office maroon. I have been an Assistant District Attorney in Norfolk County for the past five years where I prosecute everything from drunk driving to inmates at the State Prison. To date I am proud to say the only members of our class I see at work are all wearing suits and carrying briefcases. Go ?99!
I am thrilled about the prospect of working with Meg and Tim to help keep us informed about each other and to strengthen our bonds of friendship for years to come. The more time that passes between the present and our graduation day 8 years ago, the more enjoyment I take from reading about what you are all doing. Marriage, family, amazing careers and stories; our class is as interesting and impressive as we were during our four years on Mt. St. James. I look forward to catching up with many of you over the coming months and hope I can help us all stay connected.
All the Best,
Matt

(Inaugural) Horton Headlines
After giving Meg such a hard time for being so late with our last update, you would think I?d start working on my first class update the minute Meg signed off on her Mea Culpa. So before I begin my first update, I apologize for the slight delay - still not as long as Meg?s little stunt last quarter, but overdue nonetheless.
I guess I will start by giving everyone a short update on myself. I graduated from Notre Dame Law School in 2002 and, after the bar exam, I joined a firm in Chicago. And, in direct competition with Matt?s Boston College soon-to-be-wife, I met a ?Double Domer? (Two Notre Dame Degrees) in law school and got married in July 2004. Megan and I live and work in Chicago and are expecting our first child in August. Aside from missing the East Coast and only getting to see all of my HC friends a couple times a year, I enjoy living in Chicago and definitely recommend a trip out here. Enough about me.
Holy Cross is going through an exciting period of growth. If you?ve visited campus lately, you noticed the construction near Beaven, O?Neill, and Swords Halls. Holy Cross is building a new Integrated Science Complex. Once completed (expected in January 2010), the new complex will integrate the three science buildings, as well as offer many more opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and learning. Read more about the project here: www.holycross.edu/science_complex/
Holy Cross celebrated its 161st Commencement on May 25, 2007. Over 630 seniors received their diplomas. The graduates had the privilege of hearing remarks from Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.. The Chief Justice encouraged the graduates to be intellectually free and willing to climb life?s mountains. Good advice for all of us.
I know that you are all sick and tired of being asked for money, but I am going to ask anyway.
We have less than a month before the 2007 Holy Cross Fund closes on June 30 and I am asking you to support your alma mater. As Tom mentioned, the Holy Cross community has been issued a challenge by Ray ?56 and Susie Bruttomesso. They will contribute $500,000 to the College if alumni give at a rate of 51%. To meet this goal, I cannot emphasize enough how every gift counts. As our class? record of giving has been on the decline as of late, I urge you to make your 2007 gift today. Here?s the link:

I hope everyone has a great summer.
