Class Newsletter - November 2006
February 2008 Letter
Here's what is going on with our own classmates:
Wedding bells are ringing:
Steve Manzo recently was engaged to Ms. Mary Moon of Niskayuna, NY and South Windsor, CT. They are planning on getting married next fall in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Devon Broderick is engaged to Thomas Worthley Carroll. Their wedding will take place in Cold Spring Harbor, NY on September 22, 2007.
Michael Mitkus got engaged on Memorial Day weekend to Kerry Hagan of Mount Laurel, NJ, and the happy couple is planning a June 2007 wedding in the Poconos.
Margaret Burke married Patrick Stark on June 10, 2006 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona. The couple is making their home in Mesa, Arizona, and Meg has started a PhD program in math education at Arizona State University.
Tim Service and Amanda Dvorscak '02 were married on July 15th at St. Joseph's. Jaime de Leon, Brian Kingsbury and Mark Veligor were groomsmen. Many HC friends attended the wedding and reception, which was held in the Hogan Ballroom.
Dave Palladino married Ann Migliozzi '03 on September 9th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Norwalk, CT. Members of the HC Chapel Choir sang at the ceremony, and many Holy Cross friends gathered at the reception in Darien, CT.
On September 17, 2006, Mark Veligor and Laura Fauvel Veligor were married at St. Joseph's Chapel on our lovely campus. The reception followed at the Beechwood Hotel, also in Worcester, and was attended by many members of the Class of 2001 - specifically Maureen Flannery and Justin Lednar who were part of the wedding party and Brian Kingsbury and Tim Service who served as ushers. Other classmates in attendance included: Jim Bernat, Jaime de Leon, Joanna Gately and Mary Noone. After cruising the Mediterranean on their honeymoon, the couple has settled in Shrewsbury.
Congratulations to our classmates and spouses who have recently been engaged or married. Best wishes for long and happy lives together!
Trailblazing Crusaders:
Megan Cuff just completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology. After graduating from teh Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in June, Dr. Cuff is now working at two clinics in Massachusetts specializing in the treatment of children, adolescents, and families.
Dan Miller is on the Board of the L.E.A.C. Project in Minneapolis, MN. L.E.A.D. was started by a group of eight young professionals who are serious about involving young adults in giving time - and some money - to charitable causes. There was a great article in the November 5, 2006 Star Tribune. Click here to read the article!
Jaime de Leon left Worcester and his job at Assumption College. He is not the Senior Assistant Director of Admission at Seton Hall University. He grew up in New Jersey and wanted to return home after spending the last 10+ years in Worcester.
The fall, Kara Reeve started a 2-year Master in City Planning program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Seh will be focusing on environmental policy and international and regional policy and planning.
Brent Otto S.J. pronounced his first vows on August 12th at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Fayetteville, New York. This marks a milestone in Brent's Jesuit formation, and we congratulate him! Brent is on pace to be celebrating Mass at our 15th reunion. Brent is currently studying at Fordham. If you're in the area, look him up!
Keep sending those updates! Your news makes these letters more interesting! The green card in this letter is an easy way to send information to the College, or you can email any class chair.
Speaking of Class Chairs, I wanted to take this chance to thank Sarah (Foley) Lawlor for her 5+ years of service to our class as a Class Chair. Sarah has decided to step down from teh position of Class Chair and we will miss her! Rusmir Music has stepped in to fill Sarah's position. Rusmir lives close to HC as he is working at Brandeis University. Rusmir can be reached at rusmir_music@hotmail.com.
Reunion Recap
The weather was terrible. Short of a June snow storm it's hard to imagine any worse weather than what we had, but that didn't dampen our spirits! Reunion weekend truly was like walking back in time. Friday night felt a lot more like a Tuesday night at HC. After a "BBQ" that was unlike any we experienced as students (Salmon? Ribs? It seems to me that BBQ usually meant dry burgers and rubbery chicken when we were here), classmates camped out in the Pub - though the selection was a little better than the 'pub beer' we used to thrive on. The die-hards continued to party into the early morning hours in Wheeler basement.
Since the picnic was basically a washout, I would say the highlight of Saturday was dinner in Kimball. After our class Mass, which was celebrated by Father Miracky, everyone donned our best 'dance' attire, and headed for Kimball. Luckily we didn't have traditional "Kimball" food, though I suspect some would have enjoyed a little fro-yo. The band, Pandemonium, was fantastic, and many of us danced the night away, while others set up the post-party in Wheeler basement.
I don't think many of us have partied that hard since our days on Mt. St. James. What is it about College that encourages us to stay up all night spilling beer our ourselves and others while competing in Beirut or flip-cup tournaments?
The partying, good food and events aside, the very best part of reunion weekend was reconnecting with each other. It was wonderful to see everyone and to catch up with old friends & acquaintances. It is amazing to see all the great things people are up to in just five short years out of college. Here are some of the reunion memories that classmates shared.
Bridget Meade sends a 'shout out' to Paul Lashway. "While most people worried about what outfit to wear, introducing their spouse to old friends, or who to room with, Paul thought about more important things, like the after party, and brought his entire sounds system. The late night flip cup in Wheeler wouldn't have been the same without it!"
Alyson Turner (Macomber) said "the best part about the reunion was being back in Wheeler with my roomies, Jenn and Cush, Beth C., and the football guys."
Alison Santangelo said that "It was so great to see everyone and remember our HC days!"
Amanda Guarino wrote "It was great to catch up with so many old friends at the reunion! I knew it would end up beig a weekend to remember when my friends and I were greeted by some earlier arrivals doing keg stands on Wheeler 3. The class of 2001 did a great job of not letting the predictable Worcester rain dampen our spirits or hinder our good time. One of my favorite memories was the Saturday morning scene at the bookstore. Alumni from preceding graduating classes wandering the racks with their families looking for souvenirs of their reunion weekend at HC along side many half sleeping, half sober, members of the class of 2001 looking for sale priced rain gear to assist them in getting up to Hart for the storm soaked BBQ. Incidentally my $5.00 HC flip flops were a tremendous purchase! Matt Bryan can attest to the delight owning them afforded me, as he often tells of the scene that greeted him in the Wheeler 3 bathroom upon return from Hart...me, standing in the slop sink, trying to hose off my mud encased feet/legs in an attempt to save the flip flops. Everyone managed to recover from the afternoon soaking just in time for the Saturday evening banquet, where all attendees had a truly fantastic time, and the open bar was highly patronized.
This trip back to HC taught me a few things:
1) I need to somehow come to own that "bean bag toss" gama (a.k.a. "Cornhole") in the basement of Wheeler.
2) Food is really quite inconsequential when there is free booze and old friends around.
3) Time spent at HC is good time no matter the weather, the reason, or how old we get."
Thanks to Alison Santangelo, Patty O'Donnell, Alyson Turner (Macomber), Mollie Cura, and Amanda Guarino for sharing reunion pictures with us! And thanks to everyone who shared their reunion memories with us!
As I said earlier, we are cruising toward the end of hte calendar year and the holidays will soon be upon us. The 2007 HC Fund is in full swing. The goal this year is to get HC back over 50% participation. Last year the College enjoyed our greatest number of donors ever, a whopping 14,136 or 49.2% participation of all alumni. The President, Trustees, and Fund office are committed to reaching the 50% goal, but this is not enough. We each must commit to this cause if we want to be successful. After all, we, as alumni, are living proof of the value of a Holy Cross education. Throughout the year, the College will be showing us the value of Holy Cross through the eyes of students, faculty, and recent alumni. Look for the Living Proof series to begin arriving in your mailboxes in December.
Remember - every donor brings us closer to 50% and every dollar goes to benefit students. Your gift matters!
Please take a few minutes to consider your gift to Holy Cross this year. Perhaps you would like to give in this calendar year for tax purposes. Thank you in advance for your support of Holy Cross in the 2007 Fund Year!
If you are traveling for any of the upcoming holidays, I wish you safe travels. Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy Thanksgiving! And keep the updates and pictures comin; we want to hear from you!
Regards,
Katie Bryan
