The Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC operates under the auspices of the National Howard University Alumni Association and is one of the oldest and largest alumni clubs in the Association.

  •    1950 - Organized as the Howard University Alumni Club of the District of Columbia.

  •    Late 1990's Changed the name to the Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC

Mission Statement

The Howard University Alumni Club of Greater Washington, DC is committed to attracting and engaging Howard University Alumni to provide multi-level University support by serving our students and our community and by ensuring a visible, viable, vital organization that embraces the spirit of excellence. 

 

 

 Purpose

 

  • To promote Howard University as an institution of academic excellence

  • To create and maintain an environment that encourages alumni participation through volunteerism and financial support

  • To sponsor activities and events in support of the University, its students and the community.

Goal

To foster increased alumni participation in support of the life and affairs of Alma Mater by: 

 

  • Increasing the number of active, financial members in HUAC-GWDC activities

  • Assisting the University with student recruitment

  • Increasing alumni giving to the University

  • Fostering networking opportunities among Howard University Alumni

Activities

Annually, the Club:

  • Grants scholarships to HU students

  • Supports the HU Science and Mathematics Charter School located on campus Support the HUAA/National Education Association Read Across America Program

  • Hosts the Backpacks-to-Briefcases Seminar for HU students

  • Collaborates with the Admissions Office to recruit incoming students

  • Conducts Financial Aid and Application Writing Workshops 

We also sponsor annual activities to raise scholarship funds and to promote networking and camaraderie among Howard alumni.  These include:

 

  • Family, Friends and Students Picnic

  • Post Charter Day Jazz Brunch and Fashion Show

  • Holiday Party

  • Alumni-to-Alumni Mentoring Program

  • Fall Opening Reception and Networking Event (Kennedy Center 2006, Congressional Black Caucus, 2007)
