Dear Alumni and Friends:As we reflect on the reasons to be thankful for our many blessings during this holiday season, let us be mindful of Howard University Medical Alumni Association (HUMAA) as a means of giving back to todays students of Howard University College of Medicine. HUMAA continues to serve its mission to support the College of Medicine through scholarships and other programs, including purchasing a long white coat for graduating seniors, and sponsoring alumni to come back to campus to talk to current students about their career paths, specialties and networking skills. When I graduated from Howard University College of Medicine almost 30 years ago, annual tuition was $8,000. Todays students are taking on an annual tuition of $42,864, not to mention fees and living expenses, bringing the annual total up to $71,215, or $284,860 over four years. And this doesnt take into account any debt they accrued during their undergraduate degree! 94.8% of current students receive some sort of financial aid and too many of our graduates begin their careers in medicine with over $200,000 in student loans. Last year HUMAA awarded over $100,000 in scholarships, but it is clear that we need to do more. Our students need your generosity more than ever. For these reasons and more, I hope you will join me and contribute to HUMAA through the HUMAA Presidents Initiative - a campaign to raise $1 million in additional scholarship funds over the next five years. Enough to roughly give one student a full scholarship plus living expenses for all four years. A true investment in our future. Any amount you can contribute to this effort, no matter how small, would be appreciated, both by the students we support and myself. Choose to donate by credit card, check or through our secure website. Your HUMAA family sends to you our seasons greetings and wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! May the coming year bring you peace, good health, love, and joy. Sincerely, Kevin J. Mitchell, M.D.
