    James Avery Booker Jr., DDS, M.D.

 

    A native of Richmond, Virginia, he was born on May 26, 1936, to the late James A. Booker, Sr., and Thelma Morton Booker. He graduated from Armstrong High School in 1953 and Hampton Institute in 1957. He distinguished himself as the first African-American graduate of the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1961. After two years of private practice, he began his lifetime career in medicine at Howard University School of Medicine, graduating in 1968. He completed his Internship in the Public Health Service at the Presidio in San Francisco, and completed his residency in General Surgery in California’s Veteran’s Administration system. He was a board-certified trauma surgeon and was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as the American College of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. He had many successful years of private practice and also practiced as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force and Reserves, retiring as a Colonel in 1996. He leaves behind a legacy of medical education as an Assistant Professor at the Martin Luther King/Charles Drew School of Medicine, in Los Angeles, where he also served as Medical Director. Shortly thereafter, he left clinical practice and retired to Slidell, Louisiana, where he also served as Adjunct Faculty at Tulane University School of Medicine. He survived Hurricane Katrina and moved to Lincoln, Ca, where he joined the state as a medical consultant. He is a Lifetime Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as well a member of the 100 Black Men Association. Dr. Booker passed away inRoseville, Ca, on July 29, 2009, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Rita M. Booker, his mother, Thelma M. Booker and five children: James A. Booker III; Karla L. Booker, MD; Candance M. Carter; Michael J. Booker; JaRita B. Booker. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. The family invites friends and colleagues to attend the viewing on Friday, August 7, from 1-5 PM at the McNary-Morgan-Greene & Jackson Mortuary (3630 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland, California (510) 848-1239) and funeral services on Saturday, August 8, at 11 AM at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church (1004 14th Street, Oakland, California). Internment and repast to follow.
