Duke Alumni Association Volunteer Leadership Conference
Homecoming Weekend: September 25-26, 2009

Registration is now live - Click here to register

Duke's annual Volunteer Leadership Conference (VLC) will take place during Homecoming, September 25-26. From alumni admissions interviewers to career counselors, Duke club volunteers, and reunions planners, alumni volunteers are vital to the mission of the DAA. Come back this Homecoming for essential training sessions and a great fall football weekend. The VLC has been designed to give you an opportunity to connect with administrators, staff, and other volunteers while still allowing you time to see the latest and greatest that Duke has to offer.

We have expanded our planned VLC programming to include several new sessions.

We'll kick off VLC and Homecoming Weekend at noon on Friday, September 25, with an invitation-only lunch with your fellow volunteers and members of the Half Century Club. Immediately following lunch, president Brodhead will give his State of the University address and recognize some of the winners of the DAA's Charles A. Dukes and Forever Duke awards. Friday will wrap up with a volunteer-only cocktail reception preceding the Homecoming dance.

On Saturday morning we'll begin with breakfast featuring Steve Nowicki, dean of undergraduate education, who will discuss alumni engagement in the academic experience at Duke, including The Reader Project, a new joint initiative between Duke's Writing in the Disciplines Program and the Office of Alumni Affairs.

Next, VLC participants will hear from Ann Pelham '74, president of the DAA and Hardy Vieux '93, president-elect of the DAA, about new opportunities for volunteer engagement with the DAA. Besides our traditional volunteer programs, you'll hear about some of the exciting special projects currently being undertaken by alumni volunteers. From DukeAlumsEngage and the Women's Forum to DEMAN (Duke Entertainment, Media, and the Arts Network) and career & mentoring programs, this is a chance to hear about the latest and greatest work being undertaken by your fellow volunteers.

Following this session, you'll hear from a trio of campus administrators about their upcoming initiatives and biggest priorities for the coming year. The panel will feature Eric Mlyn, director of DukeEngage, Bill Wright-Swadel, director of the Duke Career Center, and Pam Saldanha '04, senior admissions officer from Duke's undergraduate admissions office. Get the inside scoop on what's happening here on campus from some of Duke's top administrators.

Afterwards, you'll have the chance to break out with the DAA staff who coordinate your volunteer program and prepare for the upcoming year over a casual working lunch.

VLC isn't just about training – it's about reconnecting with Duke and your fellow volunteers and a chance to be recognized for your invaluable contribution. All alumni volunteers will be invited to gather together on the football field sometime during the game, along with special recognition for the inaugural class of Forever Duke Award winners.
