DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

A service on Monday, September 11, honored the six Duke alumni who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The ceremony was held in the Keohane Quad Memorial Grove at 10:40 a.m. at the plaque that rests between the six trees planted in 2002 as a memorial to our lost alumni.

During the morning, University Carillonneur Sam Hammond ' 68, M.T.S. ' 96 rang the bells from Duke Chapel as follows: one chime at 8:46 a.m., one chime at 9:01, one chime at 9:43, one chime at 9:50, one chime at 10:10, and one chime at 10:28. After the chiming of six bells at 11:00, the ceremony began, with remarks by President Richard H. Brodhead and others.

At eight o'clock in the evening, in the new Plaza on West Campus, a student-organized memorial service took place. For biographical information on those who died, click here.
