Events Update:

Duke Alums Engage, Fall into Fitness Fair at Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School

On Saturday, October 31, the Duke Club of Washington participated in the Alumni Association's inaugural Duke Alums Engage Week, a coordinated, nationwide effort intended to foster civic engagement in 20 cities.  More than 50 local alumni partnered with Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School to organize a health and fitness fair to benefit the school's students, parents and local community members.  The Fall into Fitness Fair featured games and fun exercises focused on disseminating information about healthy habits and the benefit of outdoor activity.  The fair also featured healthy cooking demonstrations, health information dispensed by a holistic health counselor, a chiropractor and a medical student.  The three-hour event began with a welcome from Ludlow-Taylor's principal who thanked DCW for its almost 30-year partnership with the school and opening remarks from Alumni Association President Ann Pelham ' 74.  The day wrapped with a structured conversation among the Duke volunteers to discuss the events of the day and the role such a fair plays in the lives of the students.

The fair would not have been possible were it not for the local support of several community partners, including: Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Giant Stores, Safeway Stores, Results The Gym and VitaminWater.  DCW also thanks the many volunteers who donated their time and energy on Saturday to ensure the fair ran smoothly and was a success.  A special thanks to those alums who put in many hours of planning and organizing in advance of Saturday: Matt Witlin, Megan Zweig, Nicole Nesmith, Andres Marquez-Lara, Kayleigh O'Keefe, Catherine Cullen, Mel Limson, Nikhil Patil, Cindy Klein, Cristian Liu, Lauren Garson, Meredith Allin, Loree Lipstein and Hardy Vieux.

Parent Education Seminar Experts

As part of PIE's 08-09 capstone project with Community Academy (CAPCS), we will be hosting monthly parent education seminars in the newly designed (with PIE's assistance!) Parent Center. Seminars are informal presentations/discussions with a small group of parents in the evening on a weekday - lasting approximately 1 hour and including dinner.

We are in need of professionals who could present on the following topics for parents: "dealing with difficult behavior", "anger management", "raising boys" (for many single moms), "helping with homework" and "Job Search & Application process"

If any of you could present in these areas, or if you know anyone else who could, please email Lauren Garson at lgarson@gmail.com.
