Everyone knows that the Round Square Conference is coming to Deerfield Academy tomorrow. But how many people know that the planning has been going on since April, 2003, and that most schools are given two or three years in which to prepare? While we all may well appreciate the outcome and benefits of the conference, it is easy to overlook all the hard work and planning that went into making sure this massive event goes smoothly from start to finish.

Lydia Hemphill, coordinator for conference planning,said, "Personally, I was happy to take this on, because I was ready for a new challenge, and happy to have to prepare efficiently." And prepare efficiently she and the committee did -- from inviting speakers to organizing room hosts and planning entertainment. Not only do we have the honor of hosting the conference, but Ms. Hemphill and others believe it will be wonderful for the school because it may lead to more projects, exchanges, and Round Square service.

Although planning an entire week for 400 extra people may seem like a daunting task, Ms. Hemphill said she had plenty of help. When you need help people around here people give it so graciously. I've really been humbled by how kind people have been throughout this planning process."

From providing transportation to the airport to feeding 1,000 people, faculty members have helped every step of the way. Faculty have helped organize the housing, entertainment, technology, excursions, Barazza discussions, speakers, and sports. All of the committee's hard work will pay off when the delegates arrive tomorrow for their five days of intensive but fun activities, discussions, and learning. The planning has been in classic Deerfield style -- with plenty of foresight, enthusiasm, and community involvement.
