Kapetyn and Keller Tore it up on the Field. in the Rink

By JESS LECLERC

It's hard to believe that many of Deerfield faculty once stepped foot on the campus as students. Many of the current faculty members were also key parts of the athletics program such as mathematics teacher Sean Keller '86 and sophomore class dean and English teacher James Kapetyn '79.

Keller arrived as a new junior and was at Deerfield from 1984 to 1986. He was a tri-varsity athlete competing in soccer, ice hockey, and baseball and started in all three sports playing fullback in soccer, goalie in hockey, and catcher in baseball. During both years he was at Deerfield he was an All-New England selection in hockey.

Kapetyn arrived at Deerfield in the fall of 1976 as a sophomore and became a successful student-athlete. He played forward in soccer, and hockey, and midfield in lacrosse. He vividly remembers how, "Mr. Morsman would always play the Beach Boys at high volumes on a little close and play record player in the locker room prior to his teams' home soccer and hockey games." Another great tradition that he remembers is that of the Varsity Crowd. Students who were not involved in their own activities would go to home games and, "the tradition was to join the rest of the school cheering as an automatic member of the Varsity Crowd."

Both Keller and Kapetyn enjoyed playing sports after their experience at DA. Keller went on to play JV Hockey for four years at Harvard as well as one year of JV soccer. He would occasion- ally travel with the Varsity team and even admits, "I have an NCAA championship plaque in my study which I really, truly don't deserve to have." Kapetyn on the other hand, played soccer and lacrosse at Trinity College. While a junior here at Deerfield he was a member of the JV soccer team that went undefeated.

Kapetyn still reminisces about the first time he visited Norm at the stock room after practice. "I turned in my dirty t-shirt, towel and jock and was handed clean replacements [by Norm] - I thought I was in heaven and felt like a professional athlete."

Lucky for Deerfield, both alumni have returned to teach subjects they love and pass on the great tradition of Deerfield athletics in their respective sports, this time as coaches.
