2003-2004 School Year

It's a Wrap for Ben and Seth

By BENTLEY RUBINSTEIN

Lights, camera, action! Once again a student film is in its final weeks of production on campus. You may have seen the cast and crew bundled up for a day of filming in the biting temperatures and sharp winds on weekends throughout the winter term. Hunters in the Snow, directed and produced by Seth Cuddeback '04, and Ben Dohrmann '04.

The story is adapted from the short story by Tobias Wolff. The film is about three men who spend a day hunting in the woods, portraying the interesting relationship that exists and continues to develop among these characters. It is a tale filled with adventure and humor that promises to please.

The movie stars kitchen staff member, Steve Berra, English teacher Frank Henry '69 and Sophomore Dean, Jamie Kapteyn '79. Although Berra is a seasoned actor, this is Henry's and Kapteyn's initiation into the world of independent film.

As for Dohrmann and Cuddeback, this is their first screenplay and production of this scale. Dohrmann was first introduced to the story freshman year. After four years of perusing scores of short stories in their English classes, the two decided to adapt a script from a short story for an independent senior study. Dohrmann was surprised, yet elated, that Hunters in the Snow quickly became the first choice.

At the onset of the project, the two directors were apprehensive about their ability to convey the interpretation of its original author. They now hope that the community can look at the piece in a separate light from the original short story.

This is not the first time Dohrmann and Cuddeback have worked together on a project. Questioned on the nature of their relationship on the set, Dohrmann, with a wide smile on his face, responded "We fought a lot?' During most shoots, they had very different ideas about how they envisioned a scene. As the project progressed, they began to anticipate each other's ideas, and soon their differences meshed to create a fascinating element of the film.

With the help of their peers and the Deerfield community, these budding directors were able to film in various locations throughout Deerfield, Greenfield, Florence (Massachusetts, not Italy), and even the bathroom of Yankee Candle. After being invited on the set to assist in the filming of one shoot, I found it to be the most organized effort I have seen in a student production.

I recently watched a majority of the completed film and witnessed Ben and Seth sifting through hours of recorded tape. They are in their final stages of editing. The film will be released sometime near the end of the spring term to mark the conclusion of a satisfying independent senior study.
