Fast-food campus
Greer begins evening dorm delivery

By Amanda Kessler '03

Starting September 9, students can enjoy Greer Store food without ever leaving their dorm rooms.

Dean of Students Larry Fillippone first suggested the idea of a Greer delivery service last year, following the example of a similar service at his former school.

Over the summer Director of Food Services Florrie Paige spearheaded the project, tentatively called "Greer Online," in an effort to get it up on its feet for this fall. After months of organization, "Greer Online" has only a few details left to be worked out.

Due to logistics and limited personnel, "Greer Online" has many more limitations than the Greer Store itself.

Deliveries will only take place between 7 and 9 on weeknights. Students will be able to place orders at a Greer webpage up until 6:45 p.m. and specify within half an hour of when they want their orders delivered. Orders can be placed at any time throughout the day, but they will not be received until that evening. If an order is placed after 6:45 p.m., it will be filled the next night.

As of now, "Greer Online" will not be available on weekends. This could change, however.

"If we end up with more people to work in the Greer and make deliveries we can certainly expand," Ms. Paige said.

The menu for "Greer Online" is limited due to the difficulty of delivering and preparing certain foods, though according to Ms. Paige, it will still feature "all the favorites."

Two student deliverers will work each night. It has not yet been decided whether they will have a girl and a boy to deliver separately to the girls' and boys' dorms or if they will simply have one delivery person for the north and south side of campus.

Each delivery person will use a four-wheeled bike that has a cargo area on the back with enough room for a cooler as well as a heated container to keep food fresh. There are two bikes which were specially ordered to be painted dark green.

Deliveries will carry a two-dollar charge that will automatically be added to the price of each order. Tips will also be expected for the delivery staff.

"At this point we will only accept charges [from student ID cards]," Ms. Paige said. This system ensures that the delivery people will only have to carry with them the cash from their tips.

Any students interested in working for "Greer Online" should contact Ms. Paige.
