Round Square coordinators to be visiting scholars
Camille Bouquet '03
David and Hilary Matthews, heads of school at Tiger Kloof in South Africa, will be the visiting scholars at Deerfield next year. While they are known to many of us as the parents of musician Dave Matthews, the Matthews are heavily involved in the Round Square conference held to increase awareness for community service opportunities.
David Matthews began his career at the Maru A Pula school in Gabarone, Botswana, but came to Tiger Kloof to revive the deteriorating school. It is now a successful Round Square high school in the remote regions of South Africa, where Deerfield graduate Allison Stielau '00 spent six months after her senior year. Matthews is also a member of the African National Congress.
The Matthews recently returned from a Round Square conference and board meeting in England. They are connected internationally with numerous schools and are frequently approached by people and institutions interested in Tiger Kloof.
At Deerfield, Mr. Matthews will be teaching math while Mrs. Matthews plans to be involved with the community service program and will possibly teach a spring-term elective on South African literature. It is also the hope of Headmaster Eric Widmer that they will pursue writing a book while in residence at Deerfield.
