Headmaster's horse "Midnight" is dead
FROM DECEMBER 10, 1966, DEERFJELD SCROLL

Mr. Frank L. Boyden's love of horses has always manifested itself in the school and it is common to see him driving one of his beautiful horses around the Upper Level. Three weeks ago, however, one of his favorite horses, "Midnight," passed away.

"Midnight's" gleaming black coat and white starred forehead made him a living Black Beauty. The horse actually belonged to the Headmaster's daughter and was originally used as a riding horse. Later trained to pull carriages, he eventually became an excellent driving horse. "Midnight" was a fast steed and exhilarated in brisk jaunts through the surrounding meadows. He was capable of untiringly maintaining a pace of 10 to 12 miles per hour and was always an object of the Boydens' love.

"Midnight" was a valued companion and a fine horse for he remained with the Boydens for most of his 35 years. On his daily trips to the stall Mr. Boyden always carried a lump of sugar, for the horse anticipated this treat. Eventually this became a natural part of their relationship. Because horses are three times faster than humans, "Midnight" was 105 years old when he died on November 19.
