DCW Napa Event - October 2, 2005
4/26/2007
Twenty-eight alumni gathered at Fred Constant?s ?60 house on October 2, 2005 for ?wild rides? and a luncheon that included a sampling of his fine wines. The day began at the bocce court with some drinks before Fred set out with small groups in his Swiss Army personnel carrier to give us grand tours of the property. We continued at the pool house sampling Fred?s acclaimed Bordeaux and enjoying the amazing views. Lunch was made by Mary Constant and was served on the patio overlooking the Napa valley ? it was delicious. Although most left after lunch, the day ended for a few brave souls with a swim in the infinity pond. It was a lovely end to a lovely day ? one that we will not soon forget!!

Classes of 1980-1989 Family Skating Party
1/18/2007
On January 15th, 17 Deerfield alumni and their families from the decade of the 1980s gathered at the Playland Ice Casino in Rye, NY for a family skating party. The brainchild of brothers Sydney Williams ?85 and Edward Williams ?89, the event was a low-key and fun way to bring Deerfield families together and a total of 66 people attended! The Class of 1985 was well represented by 7 classmates and their families and participants ranged from the class of 1982 to 1989. The group agreed that this could certainly become an annual event, as the location was easy to reach from New Haven to New York City. Brian Reed ?85 won the distance prize by attending from Washington DC! Plans for a summer event began to formulate as well. Stay tuned?

Alumni Soccer Game - September 30, 2006
10/4/2006
The first modern era alumni soccer game went off without a hitch (and only 1 twisted ankle) on Saturday, September 30th. Alumni from the 60s forward enjoyed playing and watching the co-ed game unfold on a spectacular Deerfield autumn day. The oldest player honors went to John Hutchins ?71, P?05, P?07 while Johannes (Yogi) Mortier ?83 traveled all the way from Germany to take part in the game (he was the one with the twisted ankle!!). The team made up of those from even Deerfield graduation years won 2-1 helped in large part by Varsity soccer coach Jan Flaska (a Choatie!!) who was in goal. The strong showing of four players from the undefeated 1980 soccer squad also contributed to the victory. The odd team was helped out by a large contingent of younger players although by the end of the game they seemed to be the most exhausted?.perhaps they take their health and stamina for granted!! All the players were thrilled that former coaches Frank Henry, Beth McNamara, and Roland Young were on hand to cheer both teams along. Current faculty members Steve Taft, Tom Heise, and Jan Flaska rounded out the even team and the current men?s varsity team enjoyed watching the action. Current faculty Marc Dancer '79 and Jamie Kapetyn '79 also took part on the odd team.

Boyle Tyler Alumni Meet - October 28-30, 2005
1/12/2006
At the end of October over 70 alumni swimmers and divers gathered on campus for the 2nd Alumni Swimming Weekend.?What a great day? That is how Fritz Homans ?76 began his remarks at the dinner on Saturday night and he was absolutely right!! Former female and male swimmers and divers returned to campus from around the globe (Switzerland, Bahamas, California to name a few) and from every decade from the 50s up through the 00s. Some had family members swim as well, including Mr. Dan McNeil P'83 who is a young and wonderful 82 years of age!Highlights of the weekend included a memorial gathering for Larry Boyle organized by Ned Daly ?63 where meaningful remembrances were shared by Ned Daly ?63, Dick McKelvey P?77, ?79, ?81, ?83, Tim Balch ?63, Cammy Cronin ?96, Fritz Homans ?76 and Eric Widmer ?57. And how sweet it was that the sun came out just as everyone joined in singing the Evensong to end the gathering. In fact, many people have asked if a booklet with those remarks will be made and we hope to do just that? The meet was outstanding?one highlight was to see Ayres Hall ?55 swimming against a swimmer that just graduated in ?05?50 years apart. That has to be some kind of record! The dinner Saturday night was a magnificent tribute to former swim coach Bill Tyler. In particular, the special introduction of Bill Tyler given by Kate Johnson '93 will never be forgotten?"remember, 'when you breathe, turn your chin to meet your shoulder, elbows high...' etc. etc."As one alumnus said, ?it was wonderful to see that Deerfield means as much to a Deerfield female swimmer as to a male...and tell me when the next alumni meet is.?Thanks for coming everyone! ~~ Photos courtesy of Jim Gipe.
