Giving to Deerfield
"Governor Samuel Adams was petitioned to grant a charter for an Academy at Deerfield... it took two years to raise the funds, construct a school building, and design operating rules and regulations... By March 30, 1797, the trustees had raised close to $1,300 for the building and $1,400 for a permanent fund... Joseph and Asa Stebbins, brothers who operated mills in the south meadows, supplied the stone and lumber, while Abashai Cottle of Conway and his son, Philip, supplied the brick."

A Pictorial History of the Academy
The tradition of extraordinarily generous support from alumni, parents, and friends is one of a number of great traditions associated with Deerfield Academy.

Beginning in the late 18th century when residents of area towns established a school for their children, this tradition of giving continues to provide first-rate facilities and equipment, along with sustaining funds accounting for up to 50 percent of the Academy's operating budget.
