The Cooper Union launched its yearlong 150th Anniversary celebration at the annual Wreath Laying Ceremony in Peter Cooper Park. To usher in the next 150 years, Cooper also unveiled a new graphic identity designed by alumnus Stephen Doyle A'78. Doyle designed the logo as a pro bono service to his alma mater, and we're extremely grateful. In gathering information at the outset of the design process, Stephen was inspired by fellow alumnus and mentor Milton Glaser A'51 who thought that a Cooper Union identity should be "provocative," and by President George Campbell's request that the logo transcend tradition, history and culture while embracing the future. Other notions put forward by a panel of deans, faculty, students, administration and alumni suggested that the logo convey light and motion, pushed boundaries, the quirkiness of Cooper Union (its Cooperesqueness), transparency, creativity and imagination. Stephen had some ideas he wanted to address as well: he wanted to express the dynamic symbiosis of Art and Science, the two sides of the brain, two sides of the world, two halves make a whole... and he felt that visually, it should be memorable, modern, vivid, surprising and delightful.

About Stephen Doyle A'78: Stephen Doyle is principal and creative director at Doyle Partners, a New York-based design studio known for its expertise in graphic design, communications, and marketing that he founded in 1985. Notable projects include branding, packaging and in-store presentation of Martha Stewart Everyday in Kmart ; a new identity program for Barnes & Noble, including store design, website design, marketing materials and collateral; and overhauling the identity for the global real estate firm Tishman Speyer.
