The Columbia University Club of Denmark serves local and visiting alumni from all of the University's schools and strengthens our ties with Columbia. The Club creates a forum for professional, social and intellectual contacts for alumni and friends of Columbia University and serves alumni in Copenhagen, Malmo, and other areas

To be added to our listserv for updates about upcoming events and more, please make sure your contact information is correct on the Alumni Directory.  If you would like to get involved in the club by working with the club leadership, organizing events, or mobilizing your fellow alumni, please visit the Leadership Contact page and let us know.

September 15, 2009

Hej Columbians,

We took our first baby steps toward establishing a Danish Columbia alumni club with an informal get-together held on May 25 at Kaf Cafeen in Copenhagen.

We had a good turnout with about 30 people, where we shared ideas for the club’s future before listening to a riveting presentation from Ann Mariager (JRN '79) on her latest book about the ”Scandalous Scandinavian,” Columbia grad Inga Arvad (JRN '41).

After summer vacation, a small group of us met to discuss further activities for 2009.  We have to stress that we are an informal planning committee and all of us are very busy, so we need all the help, suggestions and ideas we can get – and there is room for everyone who is interested in helping.

If you have contacts that could help or are interested in assisting, please contact us at the email addresses below.

It is our ambition to hold two or three activities before the end of the year, and though we do not have any solid details, we are working on the following:

 1. A meeting with the new US Ambassador, Laurie S. Fulton in late October or early November.

 2. A Thanksgiving dinner event on Nov. 26.  We are speaking with the Copenhagen Marriott about offering a group deal for us to get together with Turkey and all the trimmings at a reasonable price. We would be interested in finding other venues that are or would be willing to offer a Thanksgiving meal.

 3. An event that will coincide with the United Nations Climate Conference in late November or early December.  In addition to notable Columbia professors (like Jeffrey Sachs) and other alumni attending the event, we are also interested in trying to put together a private event for club members to hear more about what is going on behind the scenes at the event.  Again, any input or contacts would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to these events, we are also working on the following:

Dates for 2010

We are working to solidify dates for events in the first half of 2010 by the end of November. Our hopes are that this will allow you to lock the dates in on your calendars as early as possible.

Creating a list

Putting together a list of Columbia alums has been trickier than we expected.  Some of the challenges have included the University’s being legally restricted from sharing e-mail addresses with us, the number of alums not registered with the school and the several Columbians living in Denmark today who are not originally from Denmark.  Just because you are receiving correspondence from Columbia doesn’t mean you are on our mailing list!  If you’d like to confirm you are on our mailing list or if you know of other alumni, please contact us – this is a work in progress!

Thanks, we will keep all informed via direct emails as soon as we have made progress on the above items.

Best regards,
