Letter from the Co-Presidents: Ellen Piligian & Carol Ann Arvan

Greetings Alumni!

A quick note to let you know to check our events page for upcoming events, including an All-Ivy mixer Dec. 2 (see invite here: https://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/COU/events/event_order.cgi?tmpl=events&event=2239418) and a holiday gathering in Royal Oak Dec. 9. Details to come.

Meanwhile, we've enjoyed a couple of nice Happy Hours, one in Ann Arbor in October at Dominick's and before that, in Detroit at La Dolce Vita. For those who missed both, they were a great opportunity to see new faces and engage in fresh conversations. We even ended up on You Tube, or rather, Treasurer Ocie Irons and member Katie Freese did. See them here. Maybe next time we'll capture you.

Meanwhile, our alumni have been invited by the Cornell Club of Michigan to join them for a walk-around wine tasting event at the highly acclaimed Lark Restaurant in West Bloomfield on Sunday, September 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please see the NEWS page for details or see  the invite here.

As for recent events, thanks to those who joined us for our June 23 event at Miller-Canfield in Detroit. Columbia University Professor of History Carol Gluck spoke on the topic, "Past Obsessions: WW II in History and Memory." Prof. Gluck's academic focus is on modern Japanese history, from the 19th century to the present, international relations, history writing and public memory in Asia and the West. She based the talk on her upcoming book. She is also the author of "Japan's Modern Myths."

It was great to see many of you at our previous Columbia Professor talk June 5,  2008 when Professor William Duggan spoke on Strategic Intuition: "How 'Aha!?' Really Happens."

Professor Duggan said it was one of the best gatherings he's been to and told us that he enjoyed visiting Detroit -- it was his first time in the city -- and was particularly impressed with the Guardian Building, which was the site of our November 12 event, led by Columbia alumna Rebecca Binno Savage (1997GSAPP), who co-wrote the book "Art Deco in Detroit." We followed the tour with a social hour at the nearby Enoteca Wine Bar.

You can see some photos from the tour, thanks to Bob Giles, by clicking on or pasting this link into your browser:

We are working on events for later this year.

Please visit the EVENTS page for details as we post them.

You'll also want to check out our NEWS page for info from The Center for Career Education at Columbia University. Besides events in New York, you can participate in telephone events, including one on career change and careers for creative types.

Meanwhile, we hope you will become more active in the club. Being an active member provides networking opportunities with our members -- a fun, diverse and very friendly group. It's also a chance for you to put together an event you find interesting. Or feel free to send us your ideas via email or phone. We'll be happy to try to arrange it.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
