============================================================
Aloha University of Hawaii at Manoa alumni & friends, As
most of you have heard, the UH Manoa campus was inundated by a
severe flash flood on October 30. Ten inches of rain fell in 12
hours causing the Manoa stream to jump its banks near Woodlawn Drive
in Manoa Valley. The subsequent flash flood rushed through parts of
Manoa neighborhoods mauka of the campus, then through the campus
itself. Luckily, there were no injuries. Unfortunately, though, cars
were tossed around and 35 buildings on campus had several feet of
water engulf ground-floor levels inflicting devastating damage.
Among the most severely damaged buildings were Hamilton Library and
the Biomedical Sciences building. Flood damage assessments are still
being done on campus. In addition to the damage to structures,
thousands of rare or one-of-a-kind books, maps, government
documents, and new acquisitions waiting to be cataloged, etc. have
been seriously affected in Hamilton Library. Numerous laboratories
were ravaged in several buildings and dozens of faculty members may
have lost years - and for some, a lifetime's - worth of research and
experiments. Losses in classroom and office furnishings, computer
technology, scientific equipment and other academic-support
materials have been severe. To see an on-line slide show of
damage to Hamilton Library alone, follow this link:
The extent of the
destruction and damage is still being assessed, but will certainly
be well into the millions of dollars. Insurance proceeds, as well as
state and federal funds will go a long way in helping the UH Manoa
campus recover. But more is needed. As a member of our UH Manoa
community, please consider a donation to a flood relief fund. All
gifts - no matter how large or small - will make a difference.
