MCJ Alumni and Friends Chapter Hall of Fame Event –an elegant wine and hors d’ourves event held on October 29th from 6 – 9 p.m. at the Smittcamp Alumni House. This year’s inaugural inductee was Dr. Roberta Asahina, an advertising icon in the Valley and professor in the MCJ department for 25 years.
Fresno State MCJ Students comment about Dr. Asahina:
For the past 26 years, California State University, Fresno has had the honor of Dr. Roberta Asahina as an instructor on campus. -Amanda Macksound
She continued on her quest for education and was the first woman to receive her doctoral degree in Drama from Tufts University. As time progressed, she continued to break barriers. She went on to become the first female instructor in the mass communication and journalism department with a doctoral degree. -Aaron McNally
It was no easy journey for Dr. Asahina, but with her hard work, she became the first person in the Mass Communication and Journalism Department to have a PHD. She is in charge of the Advertising option in the MCJ department. -Mike Williams
Dr. Asahina said that her students are the reason she’s still teaching and has a deep love and concern for each of them. However, she didn’t realize that she’s the reason why some of her students chose advertising as their emphasis. “She convinced me to make advertising my emphasis within the Mass Communication Journalism department at Fresno State,” said Brandon Lindner, former student and California State University, Fresno alumni. -Gina Torres
The one stone that Dr. Asahina is still polishing is herself. Although she was the first woman, as well as the first PhD. hired in the MCJ department at Fresno State, she also wants to be the first MCJ professor to have a Forestry degree. “I volunteer for the National Forest Foundation every summer,” said Asahina. “I think it would be fun to get a degree in Forestry after I retire. -Chance Williams
When talking to her students, Dr. Roberta Asahina is a cheerleader, when talking with colleagues she is a wealth of information and a smiling face, to everyone she is dedication personified. -Amanda Fine
Veronica Flores, the National Sales Manager at Univision Television Group, also had Dr. Asahina as a professor at Fresno State. Flores described Asahina as passionate and enthusiastic as a teacher. “She loves the subject so much that she makes you love it as well,” Flores said, “One of my favorite classes was the Advertising Campaigns class.” Flores also said that Fresno State is lucky to have her and that she deserves to be honored at the Hall of Fame event. -Athena Yee
In achieving such accolades came obstacles. Asahina enforces a “can-do” attitude upon all of her students to ignore obstacles. “She encourages no boundaries and encourages constantly. Her temper comes out when you’re not living up to your full capabilities and when you won’t change for the better,” said Kerry Sabbatini, a 2003 advertising graduate. -Chris Collins
Over the years, Asahina has connected to hundreds of students as coach of National Student Advertising Competition, which involves development of a national advertising campaign. -Jackie Mundt
Maybe it is this mindset and knowhow that makes Asahina such a “dedicated and passionate teacher,” according to students who have studied under her. -Larissa Goosey
A pride of Asahina’s over the years has been the national student advertising team and competition. In her time as a professor at Fresno State, she has received regional recognition and gone to the national competition seven times. -Katie Robertson
