Karen (Hickey) Girton ()
Karen (Hickey) Girton (1965) writes, "As a new graduate of the SUNY School of Nursing, I worked on medical-surgical units at the Buffalo VA Hospital and Mass General Hospital, Boston. After relocating to the west coast, I worked 18 years at Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto, CA rotating daily throughout all adult and neonatal intensive care units. It was exciting working with the first heart transplant team in the U.S. and equally rewarding to co-author Stanford's first "Diabetic Reference Guide." In 1981, I received my MS in Community Health Nursing and a Nurse Practitioner certification from San Jose State U, where I also taught undergraduate nursing courses. For years, I enjoyed developing and teaching courses for continuing education at Stanford and a local community college. While co-authoring articles for nursing journals and a chapter in "Nursing and the Aged," I also gave presentations on gerontology and research projects at national conferences. I retired after 27 rewarding years as a clinical geriatric nurse specialist and nursing coordinator in the Palo Alto VA Extended Care Service. "

Barbara (Topf) Topf Uziel (School of Nursing)
Barbara (Topf) Uziel (School of Nursing, 1965) has held a position at a local health department located in Bethel, CT as Nurse Educator for Emergency Preparedness. "Although officially retired, I work part-time with a local health department doing Emergency Preparedness. We are ready to set up a mass dispensing clinic in case of bioterrorism and used our skills for mass flu vaccinations during the H1N1 outbreak. The job entails volunteer recruitment and training as well as writing policies and procedures. It's a great way to use many of the skills I've acquired during my career yet still maintain most of the freedom of retirement!  Click here for photo

Andrew Hawkins ()
Andrew Hawkins (1998) recently accepted a position at CNL Commercial Real Estate located in Jacksonville, FL as Senior Vice President. Andrew recently was employed at Transwestern as Partner in their New York City office. "Our move was primarily lifestyle driven and somewhat weather related. We evaluated where we were in our lives and thought a relocation from the Northeast to Southeast region would be beneficial for the family first and foremost. Population growth in the Southeast and how it's impacting the business climate were also factors that came into play with our decision. Very happy thus far and looking forward to the transition."  Click here for photo

Catching Up

Gerald (Gross) Ross ()
Gerald (Gross) Ross (1968) writes, "I was a sixties radical at UB and one if the "Buffalo Nine" defendants. I was Chairman of the Martin Sostre Defense Committee and Chairman of Youth Against War and Fascism. What UB provided: a series of right-wing professors who apologized for the war, a math prof who taught a junior year math class as if it were a post grad seminar, one perpetually drunk prof who showed up for only half his lectures, etc. A week long moratorium on classes and a campus-wide teach in on the war designed to defuse the protests. Since graduation: slowly put my life back together earning an MA in CS at U of Oregon where I found a completely different atmosphere from jack-booted Buffalo cops and clueless administrators. I was able to become myself in Eugene, Oregon as an artist, an accomplished painter with exhibits in Oregon and in many places in Italy: Rome, Milan, Bologna, etc. "  Click here for photo

Michele (Nice) Babcock-Nice ()
Michele (Babcock) Babcock-Nice (BA, Psychology, 1993 & BA, Political Science, 1993) writes, "In my years since graduation from UB in 1993, most of my career experience has been in teaching, mostly social studies and science. I obtained my MS from Buffalo State College in 1997; and returned to school there for my education certification, receiving it in 2000, also interning for Sam Hoyt. I moved to the Atlanta, Georgia area for an employment opportunity in teaching in 2000. In 2002, I was married; and in 2003, my son was born. In 2009, I was divorced, following a 2.5-year separation. I returned to New York State and worked for a few months before moving back to Georgia. Then, I returned to school and obtained my certificate in healthcare with honors. Currently, I am pursuing my second master's degree, this one in counseling, at Argosy University in Atlanta. There, I am an honor student, and am taking double the full-time course load. My current activities include volunteer work, as well as maintaining two blogs, and being active on LinkedIn with two groups that I founded and manage, "People Against Retaliation and Bullying," and "Lepidoptera Lovers." I also write and contribute, pseudonymously, for both a national and an international non-profit. I enjoy nature and the outdoors, and spending quality time with my son. In my experiences at UB, I am thankful for the opportunity to gain a great education, particularly learning about research and participating as a research assistant in the Department of Psychology. Having experiences in music as a member of pep band, wind ensemble (concert band), and chorus enriched my life. Being a member of the UB Royals women's track team, and competing in shot put at the 1990 NCAA championships also broadened my horizons. Studying abroad in Poland, visiting relatives, and traveling in Europe were also enjoyable. UB gave me opportunities to expand my interests and personality in many ways, as I was a member and/or leader in many clubs and organizations. I met many people at UB who enriched my life. I am thankful for these experiences, and do my best to make a positive difference in the lives of others, including as a result of both the positive and negative experiences that I had at UB. As a result, I have become a strong advocate for children and women, and victims/survivors of trauma and sexual assault."
