1/25/2008

College Fair: Seven BC alums in the Chicago area escorted 14 UPLIFT freshmen and sophomores to the National College Fair at Navy Pier. After distributing literature about the colleges, talking about appropriate approaches to the day and the college preparation process beyond that day, the volunteers were all impressed at the enthusiasm with which the high-schoolers approached college recruiters, introduced themselves, and asked relevant questions. Both the volunteers and the students learned about steps that they should keep in mind in order to keep post-secondary education an option, from financing to grades to correspondence with admissions representatives. Alum involved in UPLIFT are: Claire Anderson, Lindsay Shaw, Margaret Oellrich, Jane Kalista, Saya Hillman, Nicole Abbate, Sara McCarthy, Kevin Sabo, Sean Wylie, Michelle Lammers, John Calmeyn, Tim O'Hara, Melissa McDonagh, & Nicki D'Onoforio.

Christmas in April
7/12/2007
This year's Christmas in April event was a major success! About 35 volunteers from the BC community including alums, friends and families congregated at Eastern High School in Washington, DC, on Saturday, April 30, to combine efforts with the Holland & Knight law firm and the Williams College Alumni Association. Armed with paintbrushes and gardening tools, the BC volunteers repainted the entire first floor locker bays and did some much-needed weeding and landscaping in front of the high school. We received many compliments from both the custodians and the vice principal, who noticed that the first floor looked a lot brighter and cleaner as a result of our efforts. Several members of the alumni community were also out the previous Saturday at the high school in order to prep and clean a biology classroom for the following week's paintwork. This volunteer project is part of a nationwide effort by the non-profit "Christmas in April" organization (www.rebuildingtogether.com), which this year alone assisted over 8.000 elderly, handicapped, or low-income homeowners and nonprofit institutions. A sincere thank you goes out to all of the volunteers, family and friends who came out and made this event possible.
