On Saturday, May 10th, the Boston College alumni of Fairfield County will be volunteering at Person-to-Person of Darien to assist with the receipt of donated food items during the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Annual Food Drive. This marks the 22nd consecutive year that Person-to-Person will be the recipient of grocery donations during the food drive that spans Darien and Norwalk. More than 50,000 pounds of food – canned goods that will help stock Person-to-Person’s Norwalk and Darien food pantries for 3 months — are expected to be collected from local residents during the event.

Norwalk and Darien Letter Carriers will collect non-perishable foods that local residents leave at their mail boxes early in the morning on the 10th and will deliver the food to Person-to-Person throughout the day. BC volunteers will assist with the unloading of groceries from the postal trucks and sorting the groceries for storage in the Emergency Food Pantries.

As always, friends and family of alumni are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are asked to bring a non-perishable food item (or more) on the day of the event. Don't forget to sport your maroon and gold!

Stamford, CT 06902

Come join fellow alumni, family and friends as we embrace the commitment to service that BC has instilled in us all. A small group of alumni will be preparing and serving lunch at the New Covenant House (NCH) in Stamford, CT. Volunteers will be asked to serve and/or prepare the main dish, a salad or dessert for the lunch. All food will be prepared in advance of the event in accordance with a recipe that has been pre-selected, and brought to the New Covenant House the morning of the event. Please be sure to register as soon as possible, as only a limited number of volunteers will be able to partake. All family and friends are welcome, but please register with the correct number of people in your party for planning purposes. Children are welcome, but only children 12 years old and older are permitted to serve.

For those of you preparing food, you will be kindly requested to bring it to NCH prepared and warm before 11:15 am. Servers should arrive at 11:15 am.

What is the New Covenant House?
The New Covenant House is an ecumenical inner-city soup kitchen under the auspices of the Diocese of Bridgeport. Located on the West Side of Stamford, it provides nutritious meals to the poor, the homeless, and the disadvantaged of lower Fairfield County. Catholic and Protestant parishes from Stamford, Darien, Greenwich and New Canaan provide meals for the entire month.  It serves over 350,000 meals annually.

As a follow-up to this event, the BC Alumni of Fairfield County has teamed up with the Notre Dame Alumni of Fairfield County to serve lunch one weekend every other month at the New Covenant House. If you can not make this event, but would be interested in volunteering at the New Covenant House in the future, please make sure to contact me so I can make sure you are added to the list of volunteers.

National Day of Service
Community Gardens Spring Cleanup
Saturday, April 13, 2013
9:30 a.m.- noon
Burroughs Community Center
2470 Fairfield Avenue
Bridgeport, CT 06605

On Saturday, April 13th, the Boston College alumni of Fairfield County will be working to beautify our local community as part of the Boston College National Day of Service. The Burroughs Community Center in Bridgeport needs our help to cleanup the community gardens in time for spring planting. BC volunteers will be asked to do the following:

- Spread wood chips in the walking areas between garden plots
- Till the soil in each of the plots and add new top soil
- General clean-up of the garden area

Volunteers should plan to bring their own gardening gloves and to wear clothes that they don't mind getting dirty (don't forget to wear your maroon and gold!). The community center does have shovels and wheelbarrows, but volunteers are encouraged to bring extra shovels and gardening rakes if possible.

The Community Garden at the Burroughs Community Center allows 18 neighborhood families to experience the joy of gardening. Growing their own fresh vegetables and eating healthily has been made more affordable for families struggling to make ends meet with the high cost of living in CT. Members of the community center use two of the plots for educational and recreational gardening as well, that includes growing vegetables, herbs, flowers, and butterflies.
