Back Ground Information

Throughout the 1980's, American University of Beirut Alumni in Kuwait held sporadic events. It wasn't until 1993 that the Kuwait Chapter of the American University of Beirut was officially established.
Mr. Faisal Al Mutawa was appointed President of the chapter, Mr. Nasser Al Munaifi the Treasurer. The initial members of the chapter were Mr. Marwan Salameh, Mrs. Samira Al Humaidi, Mrs. Khadija Bastaki, Mrs. Altaf Al Sultan, Mr. Amer Bohsali, Mrs. Itizaz Natafji, Mrs. Yasmeen El Saadi, and Mrs. Maha Abbas.
In the 1990's the chapter held annual fundraising gala dinners which were attended by the President or the Vice President of the university. The funds raised through these events were donated to financial aid programs at AUB. The president of the chapter, Mr. Faisal Al Mutawa was able to arrange many appointments for AUB visiting staff to meet with influential government and academic Kuwaiti officials.
After the year 2000, the number of fresh AUB graduates who came to work in Kuwait increased dramatically, and the alumni started holding more frequent events such as the day out and Ramadan suhours in addition to the regular gala dinners. The gala dinners typically feature a various musician, performer, or act from Lebanon and are looked forward to by all AUB alumni residing in Kuwait and their friends.
