In Toronto, the AUB Alumni Chapter was formed in January 1989 by Dr. Mohammad A. Bulbul, who became the first chapter president that same year. The initiative to form the chapter was made two years earlier by Mr. John Lorenzo. Mr. Bulbul remained president until 1992 and was succeeded by four presidents:
1. Mr. Joseph Saab, 1992-1993
2. Mr. Raja Khoury, 1993-1994
3. Mr. Mohammad Yaman, 1994-1998 (two terms)
4. Mr. Labib Abouzahr, 1998-2000.
From 1989 to 2000, under the strong leadership of these five presidents, the chapter was significantly active in fundraising and alumni events. Approximately $40,000 (CDN) was donated to AUB, including donations to the College Hall Fund and to scholarships. Events were abundant and included annual banquets, picnics, seminars, and networking functions. The foundation was laid for a strong AUB alumni and friends network.
Unfortunately, our chapter then became dormant for a few years until 2005 when AANA took a strong initiative to reactivate it. An alumni reception was hosted and held by AANA at the CN Tower in March 2005, followed by elections for a new executive committee in June.
There's a large community of AUB alumni and friends in this highly diversified and multicultural city and its surroundings. Currently, our network comprises 240 members, including 170 alums.
Our alumni can be found all across the Greater Toronto Area with successful careers in business and strong presence in their industries. Our alums are continually making significant contributions to their communities. They're simply delivering what you'd expect from AUBites anywhere around the world: quality, leadership, innovation – thanks to the solid education and unique experience that commenced at AUB.
The current executive committee, in place since August 2005, comprises four members. Maha Zabaneh (President), Lina Badih (Vice President), Najwa Farha Chalabi (Treasurer), and Dr. Farid Najm (Member at Large).
Maha manages the Alumni Relations Program for accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP in Canada. Lina is a conference producer for The Canadian Institute and runs her own business as a publicist and event planner. Najwa is a high school math teacher, and last but not least, Farid is professor and vice chairman of the electrical engineering department at the renowned University of Toronto.
A process is currently in place to hold elections for the next chapter executive committee in August 2007.
